McDermott strives to push the edges of his art and capacities to see and relate to the natural world in extraordinary and meaningful ways. He explores our planets endless wonders of life and beauty with photography. Through each fleeting moment and epic expression of nature, he hopes to stir the emotions and imaginations of the viewer, inspiring them to step into the fascinating and quickly vanishing world of nature.
This month his work is once again featured in Arizona Highways Magazine with a special portfolio of Jerome. One of four photographers selected for this project, this is not the first time his work has been recognized by Arizona Highways. Last December, Shane McDermott's stunning image, "Heaven and Earth," was selected by Arizona Highways Magazine as one of the 50 Best photos of all time. His photos were featured in the July 2011 issue and another photo graced the August 2011cover of the iconic magazine.
On Friday September 28th at 6:30 pm celebrated artist, author and activist Mary Fisher will give a special talk and book signing of her new book "Messenger: A Self Portrait." On August 19th, 1992, Mary shot to international fame when she addressed the Republican National Convention delivering her now iconic speech "A Whisper of Aids". Her moving words changed the world at a time when HIV/AIDS was a considered to be a disease that "happened to other people" and a death sentence.
Fisher's speech has been cited numerous times since then including being featured in the Oxford University's press' landmark "Words of a Century: Top 100 Speeches of 1900-1999." Commenting on the speech in the biography of this book Fisher said "I want my children to know their mother was not a victim. She was a messenger." On August 22, 2012 she was featured in the New York Times with the headline "Defined by Words, Not a Disease."
As an artist she uses bold techniques, intricate movements and splashing colors to bring all of the influences of her extraordinary life experiences into a seemingly simple stroke. Her award winning fine art quilts, paintings, sculptures, and photographs are collected internationally by presidents, corporations and museums, as well as permanent installations in the U.S. Embassies and U.N.'s Geneva Headquarters. Her jewelry lines are embraced by wide audiences as being elegant, easy and timeless. Goldenstein Gallery features both Mary's art and jewelry including the Abataka collection.
The public is invited to meet many of the Gallery's artists at the opening night reception for "The Current" on Friday September 7 from 5-8pm during the Sedona Gallery Association's 1st Friday Gallery Tour. There will be live music and refreshments.
