Dentist in San Francisco Awaits Benefits of Cranifacial Stem Cell Regeneration Research

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, September 26, 2012 (Press-News.org) The journal Cell Transplantation recently published results supporting that show human craniofacial tissues grow more efficiently using stem cells than with traditional therapies.

Dr. Greg Larson, a dentist in San Francisco, anticipates that research will eventually expose the benefits of his restorative dentistry procedures.

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry, the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research and Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. in Ann Arbor, Mich., used dual effort when conducting the study. Clinical trials included 24 participants who required jawbone reconstruction following extraction procedures. Participants were prescribed either normal guided bone regeneration therapy or with ixmyelocel-T cells developed by Aastrom Biosciences.

Aastrom researchers used bone marrow taken from participants' hips to produce different cell types, including stem cells. Participants received dental implants following treatment using the experimental cells.

"Patients treated using tissue repair cells showed greater bone density and improved efficiency regarding bone repair than those treated with traditional guided bone regeneration therapy," according to the U-M press release. "Experimental group patients also required less secondary bone grafting when receiving their implants."

U-M School of Dentistry Assistant Professor Darnell Kaigler says this technology will provide improvements including a stronger foundation for implants. Patients also avoid exposure to foreign cells by using their own cells for regeneration. Using dental implants to replace missing teeth, Larson, who is also a San Francisco Invisalign provider, can improve a patient's ability to eat, smile and speak clearly.

"Large defects are best treated with this therapy due to the variety of tissues that are often affected," according to the press release."

Additional trials using a larger participant base will be needed before stem cell therapy is ready for regular use, which will probably take five to 10 years, Kaigler says.

Larson will continue to monitor this exciting research as the benefits for his patients continue to unfold.
