Melanie Edwards Desautels Comments on Pet Costume Trends this Halloween, Makes DIY Suggestions

As Americans embrace the spirit of fall, many are figuring out what to be for Halloween, including making costume decisions for their pets. Melanie Edwards Desautels explains how self-made costumes can help curb rising costs of pet outfits.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, October 15, 2012

Autumn is often a time of celebration for the American public, as many gather for football parties and Halloween events as the leaves change color. As part of these annual traditions, many approach October 31st with creative ideas for costumes. However, a recent article from Time explains that many individuals are spending more money on costumes--not just for themselves, but for their pets as well. Time reveals, "American consumers are expected to collectively spend $370 million on pet costumes this Halloween. That [is] $70 million more than last year, and a whopping 40 percent increase compared to 2010." While the retail price of pet costumes may shock many consumers, DIY maven Melanie Edwards Desautels explains that more affordable options can be achieved through creative handmade outfits.

Melanie Edwards Desautels has embraced the world of fashion head on, having switched from her successful career in publishing to a life of creativity. Desautels currently runs her own store on Etsy and constantly pursues new ideas for making her own clothes. She notes that costumes are a great chance to experiment with new types of fashion that are not normally seen in everyday life. For this reason, she encourages all pet owners to "approach Halloween with creativity rather than a credit card."

According to Time, "Americans will spend barely three times more on costumes for children than they will for pets." Melanie Edwards Desautels responds, "I understand why people love their pets and want to include them in on their Halloween traditions, but as the gap between children and pet costume expenses tightens, it is time to take another approach to dressing up our furry friends." Desautels adds that while some may be compelled to buy expensive clothing for quality, it is important to keep in mind that Halloween costumes are typically only worn once or twice. For this reason, some purchase may not prove worth it.

Melanie Edwards Desautels encourages DIY costumes for pets as there are a lot of options. She explains, "For the skilled artisan, many small costumes and outfits can be knit, crocheted or sewn with ease. For those that are looking for a quick fix, I recommend repurposing a baby's costume, especially for those that own small pets, like Chihuahuas." Desautels concludes by encouraging all pet owners to remember that costumes may help pets stay warm in chilly October weather, but it is essential to keep their comfort as a priority--not overall "cuteness."
