SPRING CITY, TN, October 20, 2012 (Press-News.org) Tennessee-based SSM Industries, Inc., produces the world's first flame resistant, moisture management, antimicrobial cotton fabric. This carefully engineered fabric, Pro-CFR + TransDRY was created for use in the industrial, military, fire service and racing markets.
Summit Work Apparel Vice President, Alan Habash, recently stated, "The application of wicking technology has been used in the athletic apparel industry and now SSM has brought this same technology to the flame resistant world. This cotton fabric is comfortable and breathable and our customers are responding."
The industry was calling for more comfortable options in safety apparel. SSM Industries moved quickly to create a comfortable moisture management fabric. Safety professionals benefit from this new fabric that combines three technologies, Pro-CFR Flame Resistant Cotton, TransDRY Moisture Management Technology and Antimicrobial/Anti-odor technologies. These technologies provide comfortable protection in one fabric with moisture management for faster drying. The TransDRY Technology is engineered into the fabric and, like the flame resistance and antimicrobial technology, will not wash out. Combined, these three technologies continually keep the user comfortable and protected.
The electrical utility, electrical maintenance, petro-chemical industry and fire service users have all taken note of this first of its kind, flame resistant cotton fabric. SSM's line of flame resistant cotton, Pro-CFR + TransDRY, will provide comfort, brilliant color options and high arc ratings to industry users.
Look for this innovation and others from SSM, at the NSC trade show in Orlando, October 22-24, or at the IFAI trade show in Boston, November 7-9, 2012.

Stanford researchers use solar power to study elephants in Africa
2012-10-19
A team of elephant researchers from Stanford University has transformed a remote corner of southern Africa into a high-tech field camp run entirely on sunlight. The seasonal solar-powered research camp gives scientists a rare opportunity to quietly observe, videotape and photograph wild elephants at Mushara waterhole, an isolated oasis in Etosha National Park in Namibia.
"One of the really special aspects of solar energy is that it allows us to be in this incredibly remote area that's closed to tourists and is off the grid," said lead researcher Caitlin O'Connell-Rodwell, ...

How to prove a sexual addiction
2012-10-19
The idea that an individual might suffer from a sexual addiction is great fodder for radio talk shows, comedians and late night TV. But a sex addiction is no laughing matter. Relationships are destroyed, jobs are lost, lives ruined.
Yet psychiatrists have been reluctant to accept the idea of out-of-control sexual behavior as a mental health disorder because of the lack of scientific evidence.
Now a UCLA-led team of experts has tested a proposed set of criteria to define "hypersexual disorder," also known as sexual addiction, as a new mental health condition.

Taking race out of the equation in measuring women's risk of osteoporosis and fractures
2012-10-19
For women of mixed racial or ethnic backgrounds, a new method for measuring bone health may improve the odds of correctly diagnosing their risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures, according to a UCLA-led study.
Currently, assessing osteoporosis and the risk of fractures from small accidents like falls requires a bone density scan. But because these scans don't provide other relevant fracture-related information, such as bone size and the amount of force a bone is subjected to during a fall, each patient's bone density is examined against a national database of people ...
