Board Chair David Meyer to Receive Grauer School NCPC Award

The Grauer School's Board Chairman David Meyer has been selected by the Grauer Advancement and Development Committee as the recipient of the 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award

2010-10-11
ENCINITAS, CA, October 11, 2010 (Press-News.org) The Grauer School's Board Chairman David Meyer has been selected by the Grauer Advancement and Development Committee as the recipient of the 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award from the North County Philanthropy Council (NCPC), to be presented at the 23rd Annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon on November 12, 2010, at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. The award is bestowed upon individuals who devote their time, talent and resources to help others in North County.

Meyer commented, "I am truly honored and humbled by the nomination for this award, and I will gladly represent The Grauer School. My service to Grauer is an 18-year labor of love and I need no honors to perform my work here. The fruits of all we have been able to accomplish over my time volunteering at Grauer is all the recognition I really need. Volunteerism is at the very heart of Grauer and I wear this badge proudly. It is simply the way I believe we should do things --- not for the awards, but for the pleasure we derive as human beings for helping others and advancing society."

The NCPC is an association of professionals, board members and volunteers of nonprofit organizations serving North San Diego County communities. The Council provides education and training in fundraising and leadership development, promoting the values of philanthropy, fostering communication among those in the nonprofit sector and recognizing individuals whose efforts positively impact the community.

The Grauer School is a charitable institution led by a volunteer board; its students commit several thousand hours to humanitarian and ecological service annually, locally and globally. The School, now celebrating it's 20th year in Encinitas, is an independent, grades 6 -12 college preparatory school accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is renowned for its academic balance, attracting $2.2 million in scholarships for its 2010 16-member graduating class. HR leaders discuss whether HR heads should sit at the boardroom table

2010-10-11
Whether or not the head of a function should serve on a board depends upon the individual and the corporate context according to Prof Colin Coulson-Thomas. He told members of the HR Leaders Club that "The general consensus among chairmen is that an individual without directorial qualities should not be put upon a board just to 'fill a particular slot'. A board can obtain specialist advice as and when required from advisers and consultants, or by inviting a specialist along for a particular agenda item."
