California Hair Restoration Surgeon Receives Research Grant for Study on Low-Level Laser Therapy

Sara Wasserbauer, M.D., a Walnut Creek, CA hair restoration surgeon is studying the effects of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on hair mass and growth.

2012-10-27
WALNUT CREEK, CA, October 27, 2012 (Press-News.org) Bay Area hair restoration surgeon, Sara Wasserbauer, M.D., has been awarded a research grant from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS) for her medical study on the effects of cold laser therapy on hair growth for those in the early to moderate stages of hair loss.

Low-level laser therapy is a relatively new procedure in the field of hair restoration as a potential means to non-invasively treat hair loss in men and women. The laser light has shown indications of improving cell function in the scalp, which may in turn stimulate hair growth. Hair restoration surgeons from around the world will be paying close attention to the results of Dr. Wasserbauer's research. She will present her results at the 2013 ISHRS meeting in San Francisco and the results will be published in the International Hair Transplant Forum.

Male participants between the ages of 18 and 65 are still needed for this non-invasive study. Qualified participants must not be using Propecia or Rogaine or have had a hair transplant within the last 18 months. Participants must be able to come to Dr. Wasserbauer's Walnut Creek office twice a week for a 12-month period for the laser treatments, and hair length must be kept at least at one inch. Hair mass will be measured using the HairCheck cross section measurement device at baseline and then every two months to gauge the effectiveness of the treatments every two weeks. Global photography of the center part will also be done at six month intervals.

"Like all areas of medicine, the field of hair restoration is constantly evolving and new procedures and treatments are making it easier for hair loss to be a thing of the past for some men and women," said Dr. Wasserbauer. "I've seen a lot of promising research on the use of low-level laser therapy and how it can improve hair growth. I want to determine what kind of impact this type of treatment can have on people in the early to moderate stages of hair loss and understand the significance of the hair growth by studying the hair mass of men and women undergoing the treatment."

Low-level laser therapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure with no down time for the patient and is an FDA approved medical device. Patients can sit comfortably while undergoing the treatment and experience no pain or discomfort as a result of the procedure.

To learn more or see if you qualify for the study, contact Dr. Sara Wasserbauer at (925) 939-4763. Her Walnut Creek office is located at 1299 Newell Hill Place, Suite 200, Walnut Creek, CA 94596.

Dr. Sara Wasserbauer is a California-based hair transplant surgeon. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery in the San Francisco Bay area, and has performed successful hair transplant surgery on thousands of people with dramatic, natural-looking results.
