D.C. Speeding Cameras Gaining Momentum. Is New York Next?

D.C. speeding camera issuing thousands of tickets; sparking interest among other states.

2012-12-06
December 06, 2012 (Press-News.org) Speeding cameras have popped up in various areas around the country. The cameras catch the speed of drivers and ticket the driver if the camera detects the car traveling over the allotted speed limit.

Enforcement officers say these cameras help deter drivers from speeding and help reduce auto accidents. But many drivers worry that the cameras are simply serving as a way for the department to make money.

Washington D.C. speeding camera

One speeding camera that has gained popular media attention is located in Washington D.C. Media outlets report that this particular camera, located on New York Avenue, has issued a total of 116,743 tickets to speeding drivers in a 23-month time period.

Some officers say this initiative is having an impact on speeding and drivers are thinking twice before pressing down on the gas pedal. According to a spokesperson for the D.C. police, there has been a 43 percent reduction of traffic fatalities in just 2012 alone.

Further, advocates say that the initiative isn't just to help reduce auto accidents, but also decrease accidents involving bicyclists and pedestrians.

However, drivers are voicing their adverse opinions to the measure. Many question whether the initiative is done for safety reasons and, some say, that generating revenue is the main reason behind the measure. The amount of revenue from drivers fined during the 23-month timeframe totaled over $11 million.

However, despite pushback from the community, the speeding cameras will stay in the D.C. area. And, the high praise will likely spur the same initiatives in other states like New York.

Pursuing a personal injury claim

It's good that proactive measures like these are continuing throughout the nation to help reduce the number of auto accidents and fatalities. However, for various reasons, accidents on the road will continue to happen. Some, for instance, will occur as a result of a distracted driver checking email or texting while driving. Other accidents may result from aggressive driving.

Fortunately, when accidents from at-fault drivers happen, legal recourse is available to help compensate victims. Those injured can seek compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, missed time at work, and even vehicle damage. Consulting with an experienced vehicle injury attorney for more information is advised.
