SAN DIEGO, CA, December 08, 2012 (Press-News.org) Jackson Design and Remodeling (JDR) today announced it has won five ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) San Diego Chapter Design Excellence Awards for remodeling projects ranging from a Colonial Coastal kitchen, to a Spanish-inspired whole home remodel. Judged by design-industry peers, the ASID Design Excellence Awards are one of the most prestigious and sought-after awards programs in the industry.
JDR's award-winning projects were earned in the categories Baths, Kitchens, and Whole Homes under 3,500 square feet:
Kitchens - 1st place (tie)
Colonial Coastal Kitchen: A retired couple with Maryland roots and a beautiful California coastal home wanted their kitchen to embrace its natural surroundings while honoring the aesthetics of East Coast Colonials. Strategic space planning was essential for this kitchen, which was moved to a part of the house that better captured ocean views and designed with three entrances for ideal access and circulation. Meticulous molding is just one of the architectural details that transforms the room from its original ranch house blandness to character-rich splendor. Peninsulas were added for prime storage and functionality in a room with limited wall space. Windows with authentic casing and nostalgic lighting over the island delineate the East Coast look. Mahogany floors, a wood countertop on the island and hard rock maple cabinetry with a painted alabaster finish evoke a Maryland mood. This kitchen is a refreshing interpretation of Colonial style on the California coast.
Kitchens - 1st place (tie)
Bold Green Kitchen: A young couple wanted a kitchen with open space and strong functionality for cooking and entertaining with ease and style. They also wanted a more natural connection with their large backyard. Opening a wall between the kitchen and the dining room created a more expansive environment. An extra large island integrating storage and a built-in stove was established where a peninsula and smaller island once cluttered the space. The island was architecturally structured with open shelves to hold the couple's cookbook collection, and to custom fit a table. Windows were replaced with glass doors overlooking the backyard, significantly increasing light and creating more harmony with the outdoors. Colors and materials selected echo the lush greenery outdoors, including bamboo cabinetry in two stains, a vibrant green island countertop and a backsplash of glass tiles in six variations of green with an undulating effect enhanced by carefully designed lighting.
Kitchens - 2nd place
Eclectic Kitchen: A creative couple wanted a new kitchen with modern functionality that honored the original character of their 1920s Spanish-style home. They wanted the kitchen to stimulate their senses, express their diverse cultural interests and embody their independent spirits. An unusually large island was created as a centerpiece unifying unexpected materials, bold colors and modern style, along with practical functionality. Space planning visually connects the kitchen with the rest of the home, creating an open line of sight from the back to the front and suffusing the area in natural light. A medley of accessories such as a glass chandelier and patterned plates were carefully selected to express the clients' interests. A new beam was added to pair with an existing beam as a balancing architectural element. Cabinets in darkly stained cherry wood against vibrant walls create exciting visual depth and richness in a kitchen that artfully integrates eclectic elements.
Baths - 2nd place
Luxurious Master Bath: For their California ranch home with Pacific Ocean views and a style reminiscent of the Hamptons, these homeowners wanted a master bathroom that would embody the home's original character while attaining a new level of classic luxury. Amazing views were amplified with careful space planning. The bathroom was designed with plentiful open space and defined areas for comfortable sharing. The built-in free standing tub makes a statement as an art piece and architectural element. Old world romance is expressed with rich materials including granite and marble in varying sizes and shades, a glittering glass and marble mosaic and dark cherry woods. Marble wainscoting and an intricately detailed marble baseboard encompass the room with elegant definition. Glamorous mirrors framed with a darker shade of mirror gleam above a cherry vanity custom designed to look like substantial furniture in a room that combines Old World dressing room with modern master bath.
Whole Homes Under 3,500 sq. ft - 2nd place
Old World Flair: This whole home remodel started as an ordinary tract home that the client, an artistic world traveler, wanted to dramatically evolve without any significant structural changes. He desired an Old World Spanish-influenced aesthetic with a contemporary twist. Downstairs a floor was leveled between the entryway and the living room. The entire house was completely transformed including four bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs. A new breakfast nook was added in the remodeled kitchen. The space planning, interior design, finish selections, lighting, window coverings, furniture and accessories throughout the house were selected by the designer. The style blends authentic Spanish character with modern touches. A painted trim with an accent stripe on all the walls echoes a technique used in old Spanish homes and brings continuity to the space. Interesting architectural details include reclaimed wood beams. Once an average tract home, this house is now rich in character and detail.
