Therapist Mum uses Dieting and Complementary Therapy to Solve Son's Drug Addiction
A story from Therapist Tina Wilkins shows how people are now seeking the treatment of Complementary Therapies after receiving poor service from the NHS
NEWPORT, WALES, December 08, 2012
Tina Wilkins was appalled by the level of service her son, only 18 years, was receiving from the NHS after being prescribed a dangerous an ineffective drug by his GP.Shockingly, was that the dosage was so high; a slight miscalculation in medicating himself could result in fatality.
They looked at his diet together to find the problem. The result showed that 'processed-sugars', also found in alcohol, was the trigger to his anxiety and minor depression which lead to his drug abuse.
Now 19, he is completely free from drug dependency and the medication given by his GP has been reduced to the lowest dosage despite the recommendations that it wasn't. He's feeling much happier.
Tina Wilkins, a self-employed therapist and member at NaturalTherapyForAll has finally had enough of the poor treatment the NHS has subjected her son to.
It all began with the abuse of dangerous substances and drugs which was a result of his minor depression and anxiety at the time.
Feeling there were no other outlets in his life he turned to drugs and wasn't long before he was addicted and dependent on them to remain under the influence to make himself feel better.
For several months this continued until his mother, Tina found out about his terrible secret. It was then that he was urged to see a doctor, to see an NHS GP about his addiction. There had to be a way to suppress his urges for taking drugs until he could completely rehabilitate himself.
However, the medication prescribed to him came with no consultation, counselling or even helpful advice to do with any bad side-effects, of which there were plenty. It was not long before Tina's son began feeling angry and frustrated with himself. Liberated from one drug and imprisoned by another.
His emotions dragged him down, on top of all the depression and anxiety. It was not a cure and there was no sense of change of growing independence and self-control that was expected with the rehabilitation from drug addiction.
After feeling rejected by his GP, Tina felt obliged, not just as a therapist but also as a Mother to get to the source of the issue. Not just to suppress his need for drugs but to find the reason why he feels the need to.
It was through the use of complementary therapy that his mother was able to determine his anxiety and minor depression were the cause for his drug abuse and that in fact the prescribed medication was simply adding to the dangerous mix of emotions.
At just 18 years old, this was harming his future, his education and a chance for a better-paying job. Drugs were destroying his future.
So it was up to Tina Wilkins to do what the medically trained NHS GP's could not. It was because of her expertise in treatment and patience as a mother that they were able to arrive at the source of his drug abuse and help get him off the dangerous medication his doctor had subjected him to.
"We looked at his diet and found that these processed-sugars were his trigger." Wilkins explained.
Specifically speaking the 'triggers' as Tina explained, were what created her son's need for drug taking. These 'processed-sugars' were the triggers and in finding that they were able to actively reduce his intake by eliminating unhealthy foods he was eating as well as reducing the alcohol he consumed.
As a result the medication was reduced, his urge for relapsing back into drug abuse was gone and in fact, "He began feeling much better."
From being a drug addict at 18, suffering with anxiety and depression and taking strong medication that was only making things worse, to a now healthy 19 year old who is happier, more confident and almost completely off the drugs prescribed, finally regaining his independence through self-empowerment.
Tina Wilkins has often received complaints stating the reason her clients have turned to complementary therapy in the first place is due to having 'exhausted the resources' of the NHS
For a while now, the standard of NHS care has been under constant scrutiny after cases of mistreatment, poor diagnosis and a lack of staff to tend to the needs of patients has lead news headlines in recent weeks.
In fact, a report in the Reviews of Dissemination' stated that complaints between 2011-12 has gone up by over 8%. This shows clear statistical evidence of unsatisfactory service across the board.
Sarah Flynn, a therapist at NaturalTherapyForAll, also mentioned about the problems her clients had experienced with the NHS.
The general complaints were with forms of medication and treatment that were unsatisfactory and failed to help with their condition. Also was the lack of resources to supply patients with including, conveniently, no information for therapist referrals.
"Many of the people who came to me... have tried all the remedies that their GP's have to offer without experiencing any improvement and sometimes even deterioration."
With experience in counselling for more than 20 years, Sarah Flynn states that many of the reasons the NHS lacks the resources for patients is time.
"I think one of the problems is that GP's have neither the time nor the resources to give patients the help and care they need..."
