PHILADELPHIA, PA, December 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) According to The Huffington Post, the STEM Jobs Act is a recently passed House bill that strives to increase the number of visas available for students who earn advanced degrees within the United States regarding the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. The bill is expected to be met with challenges when it is presented to the Senate; while both Republicans and Democrats are largely in favor of boosting STEM efforts in the United States by attracting foreign nationals to the country, they have differing ideas regarding the best way to achieve this goal. Despite upcoming hurdles that politicians may face pertaining to this particular bill, Yasmin Malhotra, a writer who has penned articles supporting the availability of visas to such skilled professionals, believes that this is the first of, hopefully, many bills that will encourage STEM activities throughout the country.
The article explains the difficulty that the bill may face in the Senate: "The STEM Jobs Act is unlikely to get a vote in the Democrat-controlled Senate, and the White House officially came out in opposition to the bill on Wednesday. But its passage in the House was also a harbinger for things to come as the two parties map out a broad plan for dealing with immigration. While Democrats opposed the bill because they want a more comprehensive approach, Republicans argued a piecemeal process would be a better path forward--a wide gap in views that will be difficult to bridge."
Malhotra hopes that the parties can find a way to bridge this gap soon, as she believes that a boost in STEM activity throughout the United States could give the country's economy the jumpstart it needs to continue to recover from recent economic troubles.
"The STEM industries are growing quickly," comments Yasmin Malhotra. "This is where the future lies, both scientifically and economically. In fact, the entire future of the world will be determined by the efforts of professionals in these fields. This is why it is so important for the United States to attract professionals who are working in these industries, as it will be essential to have a strong STEM presence if the country wishes to remain a global leader. Importing talent is a wonderful way to improve the economy, create jobs through the development of new STEM initiatives, and, ultimately, enhance the standing of the United States in an increasingly globalized environment."
Malhotra is optimistic regarding the ability of Capitol Hill's politicians to come to an agreement that will best benefit the country's economy and STEM interests.
