Indiana Eye Doctor on Glaucoma Risk, Exams, Prevention & Treatment
2013-01-10
VALPARAISO, IN, January 10, 2013 (Press-News.org) "We really need to make patients aware of their potential glaucoma risk, how we can help prevent glaucoma vision loss through early detection with eye exams and reassure them about the advances and availability in glaucoma treatment options we have today," Ophthalmologist Scott Buck, M.D. "Patients need to know that everyone is actually at risk for glaucoma to some degree. Recent data indicates that more than 2.8 million people age 40 and older have the most common type of glaucoma called primary open-angle glaucoma, which reflects a 22 percent increase since 2000," commented Dr. Buck.

"The key to managing glaucoma risk and avoiding vision loss from glaucoma is to be sure to have regular eye exams at appropriate time intervals as directed by your eye doctor-depending on your other risk factors," said Dr. Buck. "For sure we know that there is a clear relationship between age and glaucoma risk-once you are over 40 the risk begins to increase and once you are over 60 the risk really increases. On top of that, if you have any family history of glaucoma your risk increases by 4-9 times above the average population and this all compounded if you suffer from any other systemic or eye disease that compromises your circulation such as diabetes," explained Dr. Buck. "We also know that race is a glaucoma risk factor as well. The African-American population seems to be 6-8 times at greater risk and Hispanics over 60 years of age also are more prone to developing glaucoma. Fortunately, today we have excellent in office advanced technology diagnostic tools such as ocular coherence tomography (OCT) testing-somewhat like an CT scan of the optic nerve, better eye drops for glaucoma, excellent laser treatments and new glaucoma surgery techniques that use microscopic glaucoma stents to reduce eye pressure. The advances in glaucoma treatment have been great."
