January 11, 2013 (Press-News.org) Dealing with the financial aspects of divorce

Divorce is a difficult experience for any family, and the added concerns of financial changes can make things even more stressful for families in Boone County. When one household becomes two, affording everything from household expenses to childcare can suddenly seem more difficult.

Tips on managing money during a divorce

One thing that can help parents plan for the future and avoid unwanted surprises is to become more aware of exactly how much it costs to care for their child. Parents can review their bank accounts and credit card statements to see how much each parent spends on expenses related to their children. This way there are no uncertainties about the amount that is required and what each parent contributes to the cost of caring for the child when it comes time to decide issues relating to child support.

It is also a good idea for parents to financially protect their children against any unexpected financial situations. A parent that pays child support should have a life insurance policy and disability insurance that names his or her child as the beneficiary in case something should happen. It is often in a child's best interest to be put on the health insurance policy of whichever parent is employed. Parents should make sure to discuss who will pay for the child's health expenses that are not covered by insurance.

Child support in Missouri

Unless former spouses can come to a completely mutual agreement with each other, a court will be making the decision about how finances will be divided for support of the whole family. Child support laws are different in every state, so it can be helpful to know what the specific rules and guidelines are in the state where you live.

The guidelines for child support in Missouri are built to determine what the best financial arrangement will be for a child after a divorce occurs. The standard for the court will always be doing what's in the best interests of the child.

In determining child support amounts, the court may consider everything from the income level of each parent to how much time the child spends in the physical custody of each parent. Missouri uses an income share model, which means that the support amount is determined based on the combined income of both the child's parents.

If you are considering divorce

It is important to have an attorney on your side if you will be making a child support arrangement with your former spouse. Not only can an attorney help to navigate you through the complicated process, but an experienced attorney can help you to understand what your rights and obligations will be with respect to paying or receiving child support. Contact a Missouri family law attorney to learn more about your legal options.
