TUCSON, AZ, January 13, 2013 (Press-News.org) A new study has concluded that plastic surgery patients can reap remarkable long-term benefits from a face lift, says Tucson plastic surgeon and facelift specialist Dr. Jerold Olson. The study confirms Dr. Olson's long-held confidence in the efficacy of facelifts, he says.
"I have seen many of my patients' results last 10 or 15 years," says Dr. Olson, who shares a private practice with Tucson dermatologist Dr. Katherine A. Orlick. "For those who practice responsible skin care after their facelift, the results can last even longer."
The study, which was carried out by researchers in the U.K. and published in the December 2012 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, examined 50 facelift patients. The data determined that 5.5 years after their facelifts, 76 percent of the patients still looked younger than they had prior to surgery. The researchers reportedly did not have financial conflicts of interest related to the study, nor did they receive financial compensation for carrying out their research.
"Studies like this are valuable in confirming the first-hand observations made every day by plastic surgeons," Dr. Olson says. "While patients' results can speak for themselves, having the numbers in our favor is always a bonus - not only for our business but also for our patients' ability to feel comfortable and confident going into surgery."
Facelifts address issues such as drooping or otherwise displaced facial skin, excess fat and weakened muscles in the lower half of the face. The surgery is meant to eliminate jowls, wrinkles and fat deposits that occur naturally as a result of aging and gravity.
"Patients can prolong their results even further by using non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatments periodically," Dr. Olson says.
Dr. Olson offers two basic types of facelift - short scar and deep plane. While a short scar procedure can be done with smaller incisions, the deep plane can do more to correct signs of aging.
"Both of these methods are safe and effective," Dr. Olson says. "Which one is more appropriate will depend on the patient's goals, as well as on factors such as skin laxity and underlying structure."
At Dr. Olson and Dr. Orlick's practice, Foothills Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery, Tucson patients can be treated with a wide range of surgical and non-surgical procedures for the face. In addition to facelifts, the doctors offer nose, brow and ear surgery, as well as non-surgical facial rejuvenation methods such as BOTOX Cosmetic and injectable dermal fillers.
Dr. Katherine Orlick and Dr. Jerold Olson are partners at Foothills Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Orlick is a board-certified dermatologist and pediatrician. She earned her medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, graduating with high honors, and completed a pediatric residency and a dermatology residency at University of Arizona. Dr. Olson is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon. He received his medical degree from University of Arizona, followed by training in general surgery at University of Texas San Antonio and a residency in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) at University of Texas Southwestern. He completed a fellowship in facial plastic surgery at the prestigious Hedgewood Surgical Center in New Orleans under the direction of Dr. Calvin Johnson.
