Pop Icon Prince This Week at LiveAuctionTalk.com

Rosemary McKittrick is a storyteller. Her weekly column is the online home for interesting and reliable information about the world of antiques.

SANTA FE, NM, October 20, 2010

Dressed in an androgynous, high collared, black-and-white, Asia inspired outfit, Prince is an artist who defies expectations in his dress as well as his music. A mix of funk, rock and soul, it's impossible to pigeonhole the singer, songwriter, musician and actor. With his cross-genre appeal Prince has produced ten platinum albums and thirty "Top 40" singles so far in his career.

He's an artist who controlled his own work from the beginning. When Prince ran into roadblocks with record companies he went out on his own searching for alternative ways to reach his audience. He has been compared to Jackie Wilson and James Brown but his style is uniquely his own.

"I listened to all kinds of music when I was young," he said. "...I always said that one day I would play all kinds of music and not be judged for the color of my skin but the quality of my work, and hopefully I will continue."

His "Purple Rain" film and album turned Prince into a pop culture legend. Called the best album in rock history, the title song is a signature one for Prince. He performs it at almost every concert.

On June 24 & 25 a selection of Prince Memorabilia went on the block at Julien's Auctions in the Music Icons sale held at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Prince's handwritten lyrics for the song "Purple Rain;" two pages; sold for $67,650.

LiveAuctionTalk.com is devoted to the rare, weird and wonderful objects people love to collect.

• One of the largest "Live" auction information databases on the Internet.
• Over 800 articles including photographs are currently FREE to website visitors.
• FREE weekly subscription.

Rosemary has provided auction coverage and analysis on thousands-and-thousands of antiques and collectibles sold since the column started 16-years ago. She includes auction sale results to give readers a feel for what their treasures are worth because the power of auctions is simple.

When the bidding stops and the hammer falls, the value of an item is set. The buyer, not the seller, sets the price, and this simple distinction cuts through all the chitchat about what art, antiques and collectibles are really worth. The emphasis is on today's values, not yesterday's wishful thinking.

Each week another new article is posted featuring a particular area of collecting.

• Every article showcases an auction item and how it fits into the big picture.
• A compelling, historical context is provided for the treasures people collect.
• Collecting tips are offered.
• Current "prices realized" are listed.
