Divorce can be hard on Virginia families, especially on the children. But just because a marriage is breaking up does not mean the parent-child relationship has to follow suit. Families can be very successful at maintaining positive relationships and functioning well after a divorce. Though each spouse may have differing opinions about parenting, there are some things that ex-spouses can do to help maximize success in post-divorce parenting and child custody matters.
Smart choices can equal success
One way to move towards a favorable outcome is to realize that there are going to be disagreements on parenting styles. However, sometimes children can benefit from doing things different ways. Choosing your battles may come in handy here. If no harm is coming to the child, take a step back and try to focus on the real important issues before losing your cool.
Communication is key. Make a schedule and maintain regular communication with your ex-spouse. It helps to know basic details like who is responsible for picking the kids up from school, who is cooking dinner, who is taking the kids to their activities, etc. Whether the communication is by phone, email or in-person contact, making a schedule will help keep things running smoothly. Remember to allow for unexpected events or emergencies -- being flexible is important.
Moreover, regardless of whether you and your ex are on good terms, the children should have a connection with both parents. Keeping communication lines open and allowing visitation will help build a healthy and strong relationship.
Additionally, in-laws are important parts of the equation. If the children had a good relationship with their grandparents or extended family before, try to maintain these bonds. Family members can be excellent sources for comfort, especially during hard times.
An experienced divorce lawyer can help
It is always important for a divorcing parent to have good communication with their divorce lawyer. Since the lawyer's job is to advocate for their client, make sure you clearly explain your goal. Since both spouses may have different interests, an experienced divorce lawyer can help negotiate a solution that works for both parties.
Divorces can be difficult, especially when children are involved. It is a good idea for both spouses to have a divorce attorney. Since many emotions and issues come up, it is helpful to have an objective viewpoint from an attorney who can provide a realistic picture of what the situation is and what could happen.
