In the 1990s, doctors began using a medical device called transvaginal mesh to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women who suffered from weakened pelvic muscles following childbirth, menopause or hysterectomies. POP occurs when the pelvic muscles are no longer strong enough to hold up organs within the pelvic region.

Once viewed as permanent cure to POP, the hammock-like mesh, which is implanted through the vagina to hold up prolapsed organs, is now known to cause debilitating pain and severe injuries. Many women require additional surgeries to fix the medical problems the implants cause.

Common side effects

Although the surgically implanted mesh can create the desired effect -- that of holding up a woman's prolapsed uterus, cervix, vagina, urethra, bladder and rectum -- thousands of women suffer complications as a direct result of the mesh implant. Common side effects include such issues as:

-Organ perforation

In 2011, the FDA updated its notice stating that vaginal mesh repairs caused serious medical issues more commonly than previously thought and resulted in a number of deaths. In fact, FDA studiesshowed that transvaginal mesh repairs introduce more problems than they cure.

As the medical issues created by the implant are brought to light, more women are coming forward complaining of severe symptoms related to the surgery.
