2013-03-07
RANCHO SANTA FE, CA, March 07, 2013 (Press-News.org) Dr. Stuart Grauer, Head of School at The Grauer School in Encinitas, CA, has been invited to participate in an author book-signing event and lecture at Warwick's in La Jolla, CA, on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at 7:30 pm to launch the release of his book, "Real Teachers: True Stories of Renegade Educators" (publisher, SelectBooks, Inc.). The event will feature an acoustical guitar performance by The Grauer School's Senior Casper Messmann and includes complimentary refreshments; it's free and open to the public, however seating is limited and reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and eligible for author signature exclusively with acquisition at Warwick's. This insightful book offers a rare opportunity for educators to glean knowledge from Dr. Grauer, one of the nation's leading educational authorities on the authentic foundation of education, as well as non-academic readers who seek knowledge regarding meaningful life lessons. Through a series of personal experiences woven into compelling narratives he captured during 20 years of travel expeditions both domestically and abroad, Dr. Grauer transports the reader to remote locations and unlikely situations that few have access to. This includes: a historically significant town in the interior of Mexico; an isolated Alaskan outpost; a squall in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and an American Indian Reservation in South Dakota where he participated in several sweat lodge encounters and rode in a 24-member motorcyle formation for approximately 1000 miles to the Wounded Knee Memorial. Familiar destinations to all readers include revelations captured during visits to New York City, Yosemite National Park, a sheltered Alpine hamlet in Switzerland, and a daring solo sailboat excursion on the Long Island Sound. He shares wisdom gained through encounters with a Native American Indian Chief, an Alaskan bear hunter, a third-generation farmer, a sea captain's widow and people of all ages from the very young to the very old. His recorded observations challenge the standard educational model, but also compel readers outside the teaching profession to recognize the impact relationships have on the enduring health of modern-day society.

Throughout these real-life tales (each a separate chapter), Dr. Grauer reveals not only how these experiences create effective tools for teachers and immersion environments for students, but also lessons in life applicable to the general public. Poetically written with candor, common sense and often humor, Dr. Grauer brings out the deeper meaning of handing down generational traditions, reverence for elder wisdom, the significance of collective efforts toward a common goal, the impact of standardization (in everything from academic testing to fast food), gender literacy, the essential need for authentic mentors and the new millennial consciousness.

Dr. Grauer incorporates the impact of music and artistic expression into his experiences with direct application to the teaching environment. The book is complete with an appendix highlighting key issues for teachers that can be applied to study of the book in the classroom. The book challenges teachers to revisit the core of teaching principles and revert to a small class size where individualized attention is emphasized. Dr. Grauer is quick to note that even in schools that are forced to enroll large numbers of students due to federal funding, the same goal can be achieved by breaking into smaller groups to provide insipiration to all students who can be encrouaged to "love to learn". To pre-order a copy of the paperback book, visit http://www.grauerschool.com/real-teachers for a list of vendors. The book will be available for purchase at online and retail booksellers beginning on March 19, 2013.

Dr. Stuart Grauer is the founding head teacher at The Grauer School, president of the The Grauer Foundation for Education, and creator of the Coalition of Small Preparatory Schools. He holds a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University, a master's degree from Long Island University, and a doctorate from The University of San Diego. He became principal of the International School of Basel, Switzerland, at the age of twenty-nine, followed by participation in a Fulbright Administrator Exchange to Argentina and, in 2012, an Ameson Foundation exchange to China. In 1991, he established The Grauer School in order to institute humanitarian secondary education in Southern California. The Grauer School is an independent, non-profit middle and high school (grades 6-12) accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), a member of the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and is the only school in the region to be honored as a designated UNESCO school.
