Los Angeles Periodontist, Dr. Markzar, Explains the Possible Connection between Gum Disease and Respiratory Disease
2013-03-27
LOS ANGELES, CA, March 27, 2013 (Press-News.org) Dr. Sam Markzar, Los Angeles periodontist, informs patients that recent studies indicate a connection between periodontal disease and respiratory disease. Patients with gum disease should seek treatment as soon as possible to prevent respiratory disease or other health problems, such as tooth loss.

Periodontal disease occurs when harmful bacteria in the mouth are allowed to grow. These bacteria mix with food particles and white blood cells in the mouth, forming plaque. Plaque is a sticky substance that coats the teeth. If it is not cleaned away with frequent brushing and flossing, it will form tartar. Tartar is a hard yellow substance that can only be removed by a dental professional. The bacteria in the plaque and tartar cause the gums to become inflamed, leading to gum disease. If gum disease is not treated in a timely manner, it can lead to the loss of gum and connective tissue, causing the teeth to become loose. Over time, tooth loss can occur.

Periodontal disease is a serious condition. The American Academy of Periodontology states that patients with periodontal disease may develop respiratory diseases such as pneumonia when the bacteria that cause the periodontal disease are aspirated into the lungs. In addition to respiratory disease, periodontal disease has been linked to cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, osteoporosis, and other health conditions.

Dr. Markzar, periodontist in Los Angeles, has helped thousands of patients recover from periodontal disease. In the early stages, Dr. Markzar works with patients to help them develop better oral hygiene habits, allowing them to remove the bacteria before the condition progresses into sever periodontitis. In more advanced cases, Dr. Markzar helps patients by removing bacteria below the gum line and replacing lost gum tissue and bone. Dr. Markzar is also a dental implants dentist in Los Angeles, allowing him to restore lost teeth with dental implants.

When patients have developed periodontal disease, each day is important. The sooner the condition is treated, the less the chances of developing respiratory diseases, loss of teeth, or other serious conditions. Contact Dr. Markzar, Los Angeles dental implants dentist, to schedule an appointment.
