Hoping To Keep The Drama Relative To The Race This Year, The Boat Race Returns For Another Gruelling Contest

Easter sees London host egg hunts galore and the traditional Boat Race, reports LondonTown.com

2013-03-28
LONDON, ENGLAND, March 28, 2013 (Press-News.org) Easter arrives early this year and with it comes the welcome addition of two Bank Holidays. London fully embraces the holiday with egg hunts galore - for adults and children alike - plenty of family friendly events and, of course, a number of church services. Easter is also a major celebration of food and, for those hoping to eat more than just chocolate, a number of London restaurants can be conveniently booked through LondonTown.com.

Sunday sees the return of The Boat Race, a highly competitive race between London's two most prestigious universities. This year's race will struggle to repeat the drama of last year's, which saw multiple restarts and a rogue swimmer - later jailed for six months for causing a public nuisance - almost decapitated by an oar belonging to the Oxford crew. A few miles away, just as the two rowing crews are preparing to embark on the gruelling four-mile course, two feisty goats - one named Oxford, the other Cambridge - will be psyching up for a nail-biting race. Returning for its fifth year, the Oxford vs Cambridge Goat Race is a quirky spin-off event that provides a day of family-friendly goat-related activities, food, live music and market stalls.

Further market stalls can be found at the launch of the London Real Street Food Festival. Run by the team behind the weekly Southbank Real Food Festivals, this brand new event brings streets food from all corners of the globe to London. From burgers sourced from the British Isles to all the spices of South East Asia, it will be a real feast for all palates.

The Easter weekend also sees the opening of the British Museum's 'Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum' exhibition. Displaying over 250 objects from two cities buried by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79, the exhibition conveys what every day Roman life was like nearly 1700 years ago. Also looking back in time is the Found Footage Festival. A celebration of the humble VHS, this festival presents a humorous showcase of old video tapes found across North America's thrift shops and garage sales.

Families have a couple of options this weekend in London. Firstly, Zippos Circus returns to the capital with new aerial acts, Brazilian motorbike riders and Cuban acrobatics. While Wallace and Gromit also return with their new live, interactive show 'Musical Marvels'. The show will screen a number of classical favourites from the dynamic duo as well as specially filmed backstage footage and Wallace's new work, 'My Concerto in Eee, Lad'.

The Boxpark in Shoreditch welcomes another pop up event this week in the form of Popin' Pete's Pop Shop. Welcoming the renowned American street dancer to join a number of UK artists, this six-day event incorporates street dance performances, workshops, talks, live artwork, battles and jams.

Keep up to date with what London has to offer every weekend with the LondonTown.com Something for the Weekend mailer, a weekly guide to the best London events throughout 2013.

The researchers used women's ages, menstrual bleeding patterns and measurements of hormone levels to estimate the amount of time until they were likely to reach menopause, said the study's lead author, Dr. Gail Greendale, professor ...

Researchers discover sex-selection process of multi-sexed organism Tetrahymena

2013-03-27
(Santa Barbara, Calif.) –– It's been more than 50 years since scientists discovered that the single-celled organism Tetrahymena thermophila has seven sexes. But in all that time, they've never known how each cell's sex, or "mating type," is determined. Now they do. By identifying Tetrahymena's long-unknown mating-type genes, a team of UC Santa Barbara biologists, with research colleagues at the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and at the J. Craig Venter Institute, also uncovered the unusual process of DNA rearrangements required for sex ...
