MedLaser Depot, a diverse laser business, is offering thoughts on a new article that depicts the growing problem of unwanted tattoos. The piece states that one in eight people with a tattoo now experiences regrets about their body art, and some take extreme measures to try to lessen the appearance of the ink.A recent Harris poll found that those without tattoos view people who do have body art as more rebellious, less intelligent, and less healthy and spiritual when compared to people with un-inked skin. These perceptions, along with general regret about the design they chose, have many individuals seeking fast, cheap solutions to their ink dilemma.
Kristen Hoster began to regret her tattoo (Hello Kitty surrounded in purple flames) nearly as soon as it was complete. She explains that the artwork seemed like a good idea, but made her feel like others were judging her as soon as they spotted her arm. She felt so ashamed of her ink that she actually tried to invest in at-home solutions. She purchased a lotion online that claimed to lessen the appearance of ink but notes, "It didn't do anything. Not a thing."
A quick Internet search shows plenty of do-it-yourself solutions for tattoo removal. There are videos on YouTube and homemade lasers and chemical peels. Some individuals even resort to trying to use safety pins to poke out the pigment. Dermatologist Amy Derick has seen these methods first-hand and states, "We had a patient once who had used salt to try to scrub the tattoo off."
Michael Byun explains the problem with these at-home approaches, saying, "People think that you can actually remove the outside skin and thus the color will leave the body. That's a very difficult, dangerous thought process."
The professionals at MedLaser Depot agree, explaining, "People don't understand that the ink of a tattoo isn't just on the surface of the skin. Trying to get rid of body art at home can actually lead to serious medical complications, and may leave the tattoo looking worse than before."
To avoid side effects including infection, scarring, burning, rashes, and skin discoloration, an individual seeking the removal of a tattoo should skip at-home methods and instead opt for laser treatments.
Dr. Derick agrees, saying, "The reason why we use a tattoo removal laser is to remove the ink slowly so that the skin looks pretty much normal when the treatments are completed."
After six months and six sessions, Kristen's tattoo is nearly half gone. She explains, "The flames used to be bright purple, very bright. Now you can't even tell." She will still require seven more laser treatments to be completely free of her undesired ink, though. The professionals at MedLaser Depot encourage all individuals who feel unhappy with their tattoos to seek professional help in removing the ink.
