Job Seeker Survey Reveals Significant Challenges Ahead

According to a newly released survey report, because of "skill gaps," businesses say they can't fill job openings, while job seekers report there are not enough job opportunities to choose from that will pay the bills.

2013-05-02
RALEIGH, NC, May 02, 2013 (Press-News.org) Much has been reported about the workforce across the U.S. lacking the skill sets businesses need to compete in a global economy. And now in a newly released survey report, because of these "skill gaps," businesses say they can't fill job openings, while job seekers report there are not enough job opportunities to choose from that will pay the bills.

This 2013 North Carolina JobSeeker Survey report sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Workforce Development Boards, surveyed over 5,000 job seekers from all 100 counties in North Carolina to gather information related to the challenges job seekers face when searching for gainful employment. This survey, along with the 2012 Skills Survey of North Carolina Employers, was conducted by the Business Services Representatives of workforce development boards statewide, and both surveys are available by visiting www.ncawdb.org.

The report highlights several key findings including that over 43% of jobseekers turned down job offers because of insufficient pay. This may indicate that there may be a level of "wage gap" along with the "skill gap" among the workforce in North Carolina. The information clearly demonstrates the amount of work needed to align the goals of each group before employers and job seekers can connect and put people back to work.

"Never before in recent history have we had the opportunity to change and improve the skill sets of the workforce, which in the long run could have a significant benefit on our states economy. We live in the greatest state and country on earth and have the finest workforce who has demonstrated their ability to change when change is needed. All they need now is the opportunity to receive new skill sets without barriers," says Wayne Rollins, Senior Business Services Specialist, with The Region Q Workforce Development Board.

The North Carolina Association of Workforce Development Boards is dedicated to enhancing North Carolina's workforce. Our business-led workforce development boards help meet local employer expectations for a strong, well-skilled workforce that drives regional economies by identifying and filling talent needs through skills assessment and training. For more information, please visit the NCAWDB website at www.ncawdb.org.

Spring brings more traffic and a higher chance of truck accidents on busy Alabama roads

2013-05-02
Spring is in full swing across Alabama. The sun is bright, flowers are blooming, grass is growing and planning has begun for summer vacations. While there is obvious joy at seeing the end of a dismal winter season, warmer temperatures also mean more people traveling on already busy roadways, and an increased chance for truck accidents. Even though semi-truck traffic remains fairly constant throughout the year, the spring and summer months bring with them a sharp uptick in the number of cars, light trucks, motorcycles and bicyclists hitting the road, all of which can ...

Less time with patients is main cause of primary care misdiagnoses

2013-05-02
In many areas of business, efficiency is a laudable goal. However, the same cannot always be said in healthcare, where a person's life is potentially at stake. Despite this, many doctors are under pressure from insurance companies to see as many patients in a day as possible, which severely limits the amount of time a doctor can devote to each patient. According to a recent study, this limitation puts patients at risk, as it increases the risk of a physician error in the diagnosis. In the study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers looked at medical records ...

Study: physician time pressures the cause of primary care misdiagnoses

2013-05-02
For better or worse, it is a familiar goal in business today to do more with less. According to a recent study, when it comes to healthcare, such an attitude is definitely worse. The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, found that primary care doctors often do not have enough time to spend enough time with their patients. As a result, this raises the probability of a misdiagnosis and causes overall patient care to suffer. Researchers in the study reviewed medical records of 212,165 office visits over the course of a year to 69 physicians and healthcare professionals ...
