According to College Works Painting, Home Colors Can Help to Sell a House

The staff at College Works Painting speaks out on how paint color can impact a house's curb appeal.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, May 15, 2013

The team at College Works Painting has issued a statement on an article that describes how a house's color can impact its curb appeal when it comes time to sell the property. The piece explains that paints that last are a necessity in order to attract buyers. Consumer Reports issued a test on a variety of exterior paints and found that the best quality shades looked fresh after six years, and were still able to maintain their appearance after nine years.

While there is no formula to selecting an exterior shade that will help a home to sell, neutral tones prove to have the most mass appeal. Debbie Zimmer, who is part of the Paint Quality Institute explains, "We also see more monochromatic schemes, taking one color but mixing different shades and tints for the trim." She goes on to state, "We're seeing more demand for mid-tone blues, between colonial and royal, combined with a return to tan for the trim work."

The team at College Works Painting states, "The color a person selects for a home should speak to them personally, but should also have the ability to appeal to a home buyer when it comes time to sell the property. Though a particular family may love bright yellow, this shade may cause some potential buyers to lose interest in the residence. Neutral shades are generally safer. There are ways to let the house stand out without turning the whole home into an art piece. Statement doors or interesting trim can brighten up the property, while still allowing it to appeal to another owner when the time comes. Neutral does not have to mean boring, when done correctly."

Zimmer agrees that door colors can help give just the right amount of edge to a property, without going overboard. Zimmer notes that popular choices for unique door colors include lemon yellow, burgundy, olive, and mid-orange. However, Zimmer explains that garish colors such as school bus yellow are not advisable.

For those hoping to find an exterior color that will offer mass appeal, whites, grays, and tans have proved to be the safest choices.

Dominic Cardone, of the National Association of Realtors, states, "White with black trim remains a favorite almost everywhere." For inland communities, Cardone advises selecting earth tones. For shore towns, pastels are a popular and nearly universal option.

The right finish is also an important part of creating an appealing property. Flat and stain finishes work well for siding since they help to mask flaws. Semi-gloss paints make doors and trim pop by adding a coat of shine.

College Works Painting advises talking with a professional painter before making a commitment to redoing a house's exterior color, since these professionals can help provide guidance as to a shade that will flatter the property and improve its appearance.
