Philanthropy Matters to Residents in St. Louis, According to Richard Zahn

Richard Zahn, a business professional and philanthropist, is offering praise for the people of St. Louis; the city ranked number nine in U.S. philanthropy.

2013-06-17
PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 17, 2013 (Press-News.org) Richard Zahn, a philanthropist who sees the value in community service, is issuing comment on a new article that states that St. Louis ranks number nine in the United States for philanthropic efforts. A study put together by Charity Navigator, which is a nonprofit that evaluates charities, explains that the city ranks highly among the top 30 U.S. metropolitan areas when it comes to doing good works.

The 51 largest charitable organizations in the city of St. Louis averaged total revenue of $6M as of this past May, notes the Charity Navigator report. On average, charities' revenue usually totaled somewhere around $4.7M across the United States. National charities reported total assets of $7.4M, while charitable causes in St. Louis reported combined total assets of $12.1M. The study also found that charities in St. Louis spent slightly more than other charities around the country. National charities spent an average of $4.5M, while those found in St. Louis had combined expenses of $4.9M.

Richard Zahn states, "I applaud those living in St. Louis for their openness and appreciation for doing charitable works. When cities come together in order to help those in need, important change can happen. The people in this area clearly value philanthropy, which will make it a pleasant and welcoming place to live. Regardless of a city's size or population, it's important that these areas and their residents continue to place an emphasis on doing charitable works for those in need in the community. No matter how much you have to give, it counts and is helpful."

Part of the charitable efforts that regularly take place in St. Louis includes the famous Go! St. Louis Marathon, which has raised $1M in donations for 27 charitable causes since it was created. The race began in 2010, and has continued to grow each year. The event brought in $367K in 2013 alone. During the marathon, runners and walkers take part in order to raise money for their favorite charity. Some of these groups include Habitat for Humanity, Gateway to Hope, Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition, Angels' Arms, Family Resource Center, Cultural Leadership, Team Living Water, and the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center.

The top 30 markets in the country, which included St. Louis, accounted for roughly 6,300 of the charities that were evaluated during the study by Charity Navigator. San Diego, Houston, and Kansas City also lead the list in terms of charitable efforts.

Richard Zahn states, "Those living in St. Louis should feel proud of their charitable efforts, and should continue to focus on giving back to those in need in their community. Events like the marathon make it fun and easy to get involved, while still raising money for an important cause." Richard Zahn encourages parents in St. Louis to continue teaching their children about the importance of doing volunteer work.
