Says Dennis DeGrazia, New Energy Secretary Devoted to Efficiency

Dennis DeGrazia praises new Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 20, 2013

Earlier this year, the Obama Administration welcomed a new Energy Secretary, a man named Ernest Moniz--and according to Dennis DeGrazia, Moniz has started his tenure on a positive note, stressing the importance of prudent and conservative energy use. DeGrazia points to an encouraging report from The Great Energy Challenge, which notes that, in his first official remarks as Energy Secretary, Moniz called for a need for greater energy efficiency. Dennis DeGrazia has released a new statement to the press, praising Moniz and his heavy emphasis on smart energy use.

The first public remarks that Moniz made as Energy Secretary came at the Energy Efficiency Global Forum, held in Washington. The event took place a mere three hours after Moniz as sworn in--timing that he dubbed fortuitous. "Efficiency is going to be a big focus as we go forward," Moniz stated.

Moniz, at 68 years old, is a physicist and former MIT professor. He was confirmed by the Senate unanimously, following the resignation of previous Energy Secretary Steven Chu. Moniz made it clear from the start that his tenure as Energy Secretary will focus on energy efficiency, largely because he sees this as "critical" for addressing the broader problem of climate change.

Moniz has long been an advocate for natural gas and for nuclear energy, as well as the ongoing development of renewable energy resources. His personal views dovetail with the "all of the above" energy approach that the Obama Administration has long espoused--an approach that Moniz is now tasked with implementing. The Great Energy Challenge notes that Moniz will likely face key questions about U.S. shale gas development and exportation, sooner rather than later.

According to Dennis DeGrazia, it remains unclear how Moniz will address all of these issues, yet his early focus on efficiency is something to celebrate. With that said, DeGrazia says there is a long road ahead for energy efficiency advocates. "It will take a combined effort by all stakeholders, and in all areas as expressed herein, for real energy efficiency to happen and to make a difference, thus achieving the goals outlined by Moniz," he says, in his press statement. He also hopes Moniz will be a champion for education. "As the populations becomes more educated it too will help accelerate this effort," he affirms.

"Before his tenure at MIT, he served as under secretary at the DOE from 1997 to early 2001," shares The Great Energy Challenge. "Implementing new efficiency standards for air conditioners, he said, was his last act before leaving that post." Moniz has also revealed early support for various energy efficiency bills that have been put forth by members of Congress.

"The efficient use of energy is something that we should be prioritizing in this nation, and it is great to see that our new Energy Secretary is on board," concludes DeGrazia.
