BOSTON, MA, November 12, 2010 (Press-News.org) After watching on TV videos of children running to save their lives after a mudslide in Leogane, Jacques William Jean, 12, begged his parents to let him participate in the Mattapan Tech Humanitarian Mission Trip in Haiti. Two other individuals motivated by Jacques William's emotional statement and dedication also volunteered to join the group.
The Mattapan Tech Humanitarian Mission Trip in Haiti will be held as planned from November 20 to November 30, concluded Karrie Ann Jean, the executive director of Mattapan Tech. Despite legitimate concerns expressed by friends and family members due to the developing situation in Haiti worsened by the flooding of several villages as a result of Hurricane Tomas; last night all the members of the delegation stuck to their promises to Haiti. Two more individuals have decided to join the delegation: former marine officer Steven Cox, 30 and Army Reserve Sergeant Nicolas Charles, 39.
However, the team has modified its strategy slightly. The 18-member mission will stay in Cap Haitian in the North and Jacmel in the South West, instead of in Port-au-Prince. The missionaries will be dispatched throughout the region of Artibonite and in the town of Leogane located in the west, a few miles from Port-au-Prince.
The delegation will deliver soap, water bottles, children's and women's clothing, and organize team building and small project management workshops to stimulate capacity building and will also conduct brain storming sessions and interviews to make a general assessment of the situation.
Mattapan Tech will hold a Haitian style dinner at Tamboo Bistro in Brockton, MA on November 12, 2010 to salute the commitment and dedication of all of the volunteers to this endeavor.
Haiti has been affected by three consecutive major natural disasters in less than a year, the January 12th earthquake that ravaged the capital and surrounding towns killed nearly 250,000 people and left more that 1 million homeless, a cholera outbreak that has already killed more than 500 people and most recently Hurricane Tomas that killed caused mudslides, flooding and killed at least 10.
