Typical Cost of Home Remodeling Projects

The average cost of home renovations range dramatically from minor to upscale. It is important to calculate the potential return on investment before beginning any renovation.

2010-08-12
OTTAWA, ON, CANADA, August 12, 2010 (Press-News.org) There are hundreds of sites and tips for saving money on home renovation repairs. Every week on 10 Grand in Your Hand, DIY Network saves homeowners up to $10,000 on their renovation and remodeling projects. As one of the top ten money-saving tips, their experts claim you can do some demolition yourself.

According to CNNMoney.com and TrustyGuides.com, the average cost for home renovation repairs can range from $11,000 (minor kitchen remodel) to $54,000 (major kitchen remodel) to $108,000 (upscale kitchen remodel). A minor bathroom remodel starts at $13,000 and major bathroom remodel is around $38,000. A window replacement ranges from $10,000 to $17,000 and a siding replacement is in the $10,000 to $11,000 range.

As a general rule of thumb, it is acceptable to invest 20% to 30% of the value of home for improvements. Before begin the renovation process (taking a loan, hiring contractors and buying supplies), do some research to calculate the potential return on investment and how much value this renovation will add to your home. The percentage of costs recovered can range from 65% to 105%. Know if your renovation will pay off. It will help determine which household areas you should work on and whether to do an upscale or minor renovation.

Demolition is a huge part of every home renovation project. However, it can be dangerous, aggravating, and expensive if it is not done right. Here are a few helpful tips from About.com for making your next home demo a success.

* Create a separate time for demolition. The average demolition time on a small renovation project is approximately 6 hours. Take time to relax and work again at a safe pace
* Seal off openings that will not be demolished. This will save time during post-demo clean-up/
* Before beginning demolition, beware of what is behind the wall like electrical wires and water pipes. If you unsure, consult a professional to prevent major damage.
* Turn off the power just to be safe.
* Try to keep your area tidy to avoid stumbling
* Rent a rolloff dumpster or hire a hauling service to save multiple trips to the landfill
* Wear protective gear including a dust mask, work boots and fitted clothing
* Last but NOT least, get the right tools. The main tools you will need are a drill, saw, hammer, sledge hammer, and a hand-held tool for tear-off.

Hiring a professional/experienced contractor is highly recommended. Narrow your scope to 3 or 4 contactors for bids and interviews. Verify licensing, look at their work, talk to friends/neighbors, and finally listen to you instincts. Be upfront about your budget range, timeframe, special requests and final image of the job. General contractors are typically cheaper than full service builders and may be open to assistance on the job site.

Whether you are a homeowner or contactor doing any kind of construction, using the right tools and equipment are pivotal for getting the job done efficiently and safely. In 2010, the Little Red Ripper has been introduced as the ultimate demolition tool with unlimited versatility. The pivoting striker bars and ergonomic handle create a removal tool ideal for reaching into tight areas and around sensitive areas. Save time by removing nails, screw and staples simultaneously.

Use the Little Red for various applications including siding removal, tile removal, ripping carpet, roof tear off, and unlimited home renovations. This light-weight, all-steel hand tool will deliver maximum power with little effort. Replace your crowbar and pry bar with a demolition tool that will not leave a mess and make a quick/clean removal.
