Many couples going through a divorce would agree that it is a very stressful time. If they have never been through the process before, they may not be aware of every single thing that will need to be resolved. If the spouses are not getting along with one another, this can lead to very lengthy disputes over even the most minor issues.
In Utah, there is a requirement that couples going through a divorce take a two-hour class to learn more about the process. This class helped couples learn more about what would happen during the divorce, and also discussed some ways that parents could effectively co-parent after the divorce was final.
Recently, a proposal has been made that could force couples to take this class before divorce proceedings even start. Legislators have been concerned over the amount of divorces happening within the state, and hope that these changes would slow down the number of individuals deciding to end their marriages. Since the current class is required after the divorce has been initiated, changing the timing of the course could allow individuals to understand the other options that may be available in their situation.
Critics of the bill believe that it would not have an impact on the state's divorce rate. By requiring these classes earlier, it will not change any of the reasons the couple may be having problems in their marriage. However, the instructions they receive may help them better prepare for what happens during a divorce. This could be very beneficial to those couples who have no prior experience with divorce.
You may know people who have been through the divorce process in the past, and you may have asked them questions about your specific situation. You need to understand that each family is unique, and there may be issues in your divorce that must be evaluated before you decide to move forward.
If you are contemplating a divorce, you should speak to an experienced family law attorney to help begin preparing a plan that suits your needs. Your attorney can help you learn more about what you need to do to ensure that your divorce will proceed as efficiently as possible.
You will experience many frustrating and challenging moments throughout the process. It is important that you have someone on your side that can help you maintain your focus on the decisions that you will need to make at this time. You do not want to make a mistake that could threaten your ability to move forward after the divorce is final.
