Neighborhood Service Organization Announces the Return of A Place to Call Home Housewarming Parties

DETROIT, MI, March 08, 2014 (Press-News.org) Due to the overwhelming success of the A Place to Call Home Housewarming Parties for Neighborhood Service Organization's (NSO) Bell Building, the nonprofit has expanded the popular initiative, making it an ongoing campaign that will serve all of NSO's Supportive Housing program.

The Housewarming Parties provide the opportunity for individuals, families, businesses, congregations, clubs, schools and community groups to invite friends, relatives, colleagues and others to donate quality, new household items needed to make an apartment a home for formerly homeless adults. The Supportive Housing program provides permanent supportive housing services at the NSO Bell Building and throughout the community for these individuals.

"Most individuals leave the streets with nothing more than the clothes on their back and a garbage bag of belongings," said Sheilah P. Clay, NSO president and CEO. "NSO's A Place to Call Home Housewarming Parties ensure that formerly homeless individuals have the household items needed to begin their new life and concentrate on overcoming the challenges that kept them on the streets, and set goals for their future."

NSO makes hosting a party simple by providing instructions, a timeline, invitations and assigning an apartment and a gift registry at Target to each host. Added Clay, "There are more than 20,000 men and women living on the streets of Detroit. Our goal is to end homelessness for them by addressing what led them there in the first place, such as unemployment, mental illness, substance abuse and chronic health concerns. This $750 is a small investment that gives homeless individuals a chance at a new life."

NSO's Supportive Housing program is part of the organization's larger Homeless Recovery Services and places formerly homeless adults in apartments and homes across Wayne County, including the NSO Bell Building. Using the "Housing First" model, NSO moves chronically homeless individuals off the streets and into a safe environment where they receive life-restoring supportive care, helping them to live productive lives.
