Award Winning Filmmaker David Hoffman LabTV Executive Producer and NIH Director Francis Collins, a LabTV supporter, to be honored with "Silver Hammer" Disruptive Innovator Awards

2014-04-24
NEW YORK, NY, April 24, 2014 (Press-News.org) Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Craig Hatkoff on April 25th will confer the Lifetime Achievement Award upon Jay Walker, founder and Chairman of LabTV, as part of this year's celebration of Disruptive Innovation at the annual Festival.

The Lifetime Achievement Award honors people whose ideas have broken the mold to create significant impact on the world.

Mr. Walker is being honored in part for LabTV, which will be publicly previewed at the Festival. LabTV is an innovative, web-based video platform that showcases short, engaging videos of young medical scientists, in a way that will inspire today's high school and college students become "tomorrow's heroes of medical science."

Also honored as "Disruptive Innovators" for their important roles in LabTV are LabTV Executive Producer David Hoffman and Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

"I am thrilled and humbled to accept this award in recognition of LabTV in concert with our Executive Producer David Hoffman and our friend and indispensable supporter, Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health," said Mr. Walker.

"The core premise of LabTV," he added, "is that the real stars of American life today are - or should be -- the wonderful medical researchers who are dedicating their lives to cracking the code of health and disease in order to save and improve all of our lives."

Presentation of the Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 25, at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Following the ceremony, a dedicated panel discussion will be held at NYU Stern School of Business from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on the topic: "Sputnik Moment 2.0? Biomed Has Already Arrived." Panelists will include NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins; LabTV Chairman Jay Walker; LabTV Executive Producer David Hoffman; Google's Senior New Business Development Manager Seval Oz; and Google VP of Engineering & Artificial Intelligence Anna Patterson. The session will be moderated by futurist and filmmaker Jason Silva, host of National Geographic's "Brain Games."

The Disruptive Innovation Awards, co-sponsored by Accenture with marketing support from AT&T, have been part of the Tribeca Film Festival since 2010. Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include disruptive innovation guru Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School in 2010; Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales in 2011; Twitter co founder and Chairman Jack Dorsey in 2012; and choreographer Twyla Tharp in 2013.

LabTV

America needs more of our best and brightest students to take part in the greatest adventure of our time: medical research. The quest to "crack the code" of health and illness, and improve the health of 7 billion people around the globe.

Unfortunately, most young people don't know any scientists personally. And, they never see any young, working scientists in the media. So today's students rarely think about joining the team. LabTV is going to change that.

In cooperation with U.S. National Institutes of Health, we're sending amateur and professional filmmakers to 40,000 research labs across America. LabTV filmmakers are creating short video profiles of tens of thousands of young scientists. Our goal is to help students find role models they can identify with - young scientists who are people just like themselves, and who share their dreams and passion.

LabTV will inspire millions of today's students to think about becoming tomorrow's heroes of medical research. Go to www.Lab-TV.org to learn more about LabTV's mission.

We Can't Do It Alone

Want to help? LabTV offers many opportunities:

Filmmakers & journalists can produce and showcase video profiles of medical scientists who work on their campuses and in their communities.

Universities, labs, and research institutions can promote their talented young scientists and their research labs.

Young medical scientists can inspire the future heroes of medical research.

Together, we can make a positive, lifelong impact on the lives of today's students and we can inspire the next generation of great medical researchers.

1982 to 1985 seems like a blip on the radar screen, but almost an eternity in the lifespan of a rock band. That was the span between Prodigal's first album to its last, Just Like Real Life. Neither these, nor the second album Electric Eye which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2014, have officially been on CD. Fans had to rely upon their vinyl and cassettes...until now.
