Western images Display artistry of photography In Cowboys & Indians Magazine

Stunning landscapes, stirring portraits and spectacular wildlife shots are among the visual splendors to be savored in the March 2011 issue of Cowboys & Indians, The Premiere Magazine of the West.

2011-01-23
DALLAS, TX, January 23, 2011 (Press-News.org) Stunning landscapes, stirring portraits and spectacular wildlife shots are among the visual splendors to be savored in the March 2011 issue of Cowboys & Indians, The Premiere Magazine of the West.

Winners of the sixth annual Cowboys & Indians Photo Contest are proudly displayed in the March issue, along with representative works by six master photographers -- Annette Ross Hume, Carleton Watkins, Jessica McGlothlin, Gerard Keenan, Jim Krantz and Kate Gaustad - justly famed for their images of the American West.

Arizona-based photographer Bev Petit claimed top honors in the C&I Photo Contest with her "Looking Back," a starkly simple yet profoundly affecting black-and-white portrait of Suzie Yazzie, the legendary Navajo rug weaver known as the Grandmother of Monument Valley. The photo - prominently featured in the March issue - vividly reflects the empathetic spirit that informs Petit's work.

"When I look at a portrait," Petit tells Cowboys & Indians, "whether human or animal, I want to feel an emotion, to sense a story, to understand something of the subject's essence. I hope to be able to catch a glimpse into their soul."

Elsewhere in the March issue, C&I writer Jennings Brown gets up-close and personal with Jimmie Vaughan, the Texas blues guitar great who's currently up for his fifth Grammy Award, and David Hofstede interviews author Jeannette Walls about Half Broke Horses, the amazing story of Walls' gun-totin', poker-playin', bootleggin' grandmother, Lily Casey Smith.

Cowboy poet and C&I contributor Red Steagall - host of RFD-TV's In the Bunkhouse - profiles rodeo champ Trevor Brazile. And veteran Hollywood producer David Milch discusses Deadwood, his controversial Western series that's now available as a Blu-Ray boxed set.

Published eight times per year, Cowboys & Indians is an international magazine of the highest quality covering the past, present, and future of the American West. Printed copies are available at fine newsstands everywhere, and an electronic edition is available through Zinio.com.
