European project brings AI-powered cancer genome interpretation closer to the clinic
A free open-access webinar will introduce the Cancer Genome Interpreter (CGI), an advanced bioinformatics tool to interpret mutations in cancer genomes developed by IRB Barcelona and co-created with European hospitals to turn complex cancer genomics into actionable insights.
On Thursday, 9 April 2026 (14:00–15:30 CET), the CGI-Clinics consortium will host a free online workshop to present the Cancer Genome Interpreter (CGI), an AI-powered platform designed to support the interpretation of tumour genomes. CGI-Clinics is an European project coordinated by IRB Barcelona and originated in the lab of Dr. Nuria López-Bigas at IRB Barcelona, where the foundations of the tool were developed.
Developed through a co-creation process with more than 10 European hospitals, CGI is an advanced clinical decision support platform that leverages state-of-the-art machine learning to transform complex genomic data into meaningful information in precision oncology. The webinar will showcase the science behind the tool, its potential in clinical applications, and how new hospitals and research centres can join the CGI-Clinics community.
The webinar, titled “Streamlining Tumour Interpretation with the Cancer Genome Interpreter (CGI)”, will feature presentations by Dr. Nuria López-Bigas (IRB Barcelona), Dr. Santiago Demajo (IRB Barcelona), and Dr. Loïc Verlingue (Centre Leon Bérard), and will offer participants both a practical and scientific overview of the platform.
“CGI was built hand in hand with clinicians to solve a real bottleneck in precision oncology: how to interpret tumour genomes in a reliable, scalable and clinically meaningful way. This webinar is an open invitation to hospitals and researchers to explore the tool and become part of the CGI-Clinics community”, says Dr. Nuria López-Bigas, ICREA Research Professor at IRB Barcelona and coordinator of the CGI-Clinics project.

About the CGI-Clinics project
https://www.cgiclinics.eu/
CGI-Clinics is a community-driven project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme that aims to improve precision medicine in oncology by optimising genomic data interpretation (after sequencing and before advising on compatible targeted therapies).
The project brings together 17 project partners from five countries, including organisations representing patients, clinicians and researchers.
About IRB Barcelona
The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
