White Plains Museum Gallery Hosting A Public Opening Reception Party for An Exhibition of Art by Westchester Philharmonic Violinist, Painter & Sculptor David Tobey on March 30, 2011

The White Plains Museum Gallery in White Plains, NY will host a one-man art exhibition of paintings and sculpture by artist, teacher and Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra violinist David Tobey at the gallery from March 30 through June 15th, 2011.

2011-02-14
NEW YORK, NY, February 14, 2011 (Press-News.org) A reception on Wednesday, March 30th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the White Plains Museum Gallery will open a two-and-a-half month long exhibition of art by painter, sculptor, professional violinist & teacher David Tobey. The exhibition will run through June 15th at the Museum Gallery located on the second floor of the White Plains Library at 100 Martine Avenue. There will be refreshments and live music at the opening and all are cordially invited to attend.

David Tobey, a lifetime resident of Westchester, has pursued multiple careers as a performing violinist, a visual artist and a teacher for over 25 years. He began his studies in both music and painting at an early age under the tutelage of his father, the late well-known muralist and historical painter Alton S. Tobey, and his mother Rosalyn Tobey who was an accomplished concert pianist and music teacher.

In music, he completed his undergraduate work at The Music Conservatory of Westchester and graduated with his bachelor's degree from The Juilliard School in New York. His studies in the visual arts were at the Art Students League in New York and he obtained his master's degree in art at the College of New Rochelle. He actively teaches both music and art privately and in two schools in New Rochelle; he is a violinist member of the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra and Tobey is also very active as a painter & sculptor.

"Through his use of vibrant color and his innate musical talents, David stimulates his viewer's senses by allowing them to experience a psychedelic "mind-manifesting" interpretation of his subject," says the Library's Museum Gallery Curator, Kathleen Masterson. Tobey has had more than 20 solo and group exhibitions of his art in New York City and in the greater tri-state area over the past eight years, most of which have been benefits for not-for-profit organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, The Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra, The Juilliard School and other groups he supports.

A significant portion of the proceeds from the sale of any of his work during the run of this exhibition will go to support The Friends of the White Plains Public Library and The White Plains Library Foundation.

Tobey's art, much of which centers around musical subjects, varies stylistically from representational figurative work in a pop-culture style to abstract. His art has been commented upon in reviews as a "synaesthetic relationship between abstraction and music . . . the connection between linear and musical rhythms" (NY Times, 3/14/04) " . . .human drama, subconscious imagery, and a playful imagination, all coalesce in paintings and sculpture", (Art in America, 9/07) and his sculpture as having " . . .a unique draftsmanly fluidity in metal, surpassing even that of [Julio] Gonzalez" (Gallery & Studio, 1/07). His paintings have been published in a book and on CD covers and are in important private & public collections, including the George Bush Library, The American Cancer Society and others.

A portion of the proceeds benefit the Friends of the White Plains Public Library, a volunteer group that raises funds for the Library via its bookstore and supports the Museum Gallery program, among other projects. Also benefiting is The White Plains Library Foundation, incorporated in 1995 to raise funds to help meet the long-range goals of the White Plains Public Library. Currently, the Foundation's work supports a wide range of after-school programs, outstanding cultural events, literacy initiatives, convenient online services, programming for teens, and career resources.

This exhibit is made possible by The Friends of the White Plains Public Library with assistance from The City of White Plains. Museum Gallery hours are 10 AM - 9 PM, Monday and Wednesday; 10 AM - 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday, and 1 PM - 5 PM, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Library is located at 100 Martine Avenue, White Plains.

More information on Tobey and his art can be found on his web site at http://www.davidtobey.com. To RSVP for the Wednesday, March 30th reception at the Museum Gallery or to contact David by phone, call him at (914) 632-8226 or send him an email.
