ST. LOUIS, MO, February 21, 2011 (Press-News.org) Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis, a non-profit corporation that assists legally blind people maintain dignity and independence by offering Employment, Education and Support Services, announces the latest growth in its Low Vision Aid Program.
In efforts to help and educate the public, the Lighthouse has donated Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTV's) to the St. Louis County Library in Frontenac and also The Fountains of West County and Lutheran Senior Services at Meramec Bluffs senior living communities. The Lighthouse for the Blind identified that a majority of those who are losing their vision, have low vision, or the elderly in the St. Louis area were unaware of the services that are available to them.
CCTV's are commonly used by people who are visually impaired to magnify print in books and newspapers. These television video camera combinations can be used in many ways and for numerous daily activities including reading, writing letters and checks, viewing photos, working crossword puzzles, crafting and sewing, and much more.
"These CCTV's allow individuals to do those daily tasks that so many of us take for granted," said Angie Yorke, Blind Community Enrichment Programs Manager for Lighthouse for the Blind. "Many people are unaware of what organizations such as the Lighthouse and St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired have to offer. What's great about this program and working with the library and retirement communities is that we can help them!"
In addition, a low vision Lighthouse for the Blind employee will visit with residents at the retirement communities to answer questions they may have, speak on her own personal experiences, and discuss the services available to them.
Also known as LHB Industries, the Lighthouse was founded in 1933 and today maintains offices and manufacturing facilities that currently employ more than 60 legally blind persons at two locations in Saint Louis County. The Lighthouse manufactures, assembles, warehouses and sells high-quality products to government and commercial customers nationwide including first aid kits, medical kits, catheters, aerosol and liquid paints, aerosol and liquid cleaning products and many others.
Low Vision Aid Program is a need-based program for adults wanting to obtain financial assistance to purchase a CCTV, magnifying lamp or handheld video magnifier. This program also offers low vision services through the St. Louis Society and Visually Impaired, and is just one of many community enrichment initiatives offered by the Lighthouse through their See the Future Programs. All sales revenues directly support Lighthouse programs including Continuing Education; Arts and Entertainment; Professional Career Development; Summer Transition and Employment; and many others available for legally blind and visually impaired individuals in Missouri and Southwestern Illinois.

2011-02-21
The business call lasted over half an hour. Had it taken place in a cubicle or behind closed doors, it would have been decidedly unremarkable.
As it was, in a crowded restaurant, in front of a lovely date, the conversation illicited many an annoyed glance as a fairly obvious (to everyone but the man in the dark blue suit) social blunder was committed.
Most of us have no problems identifying the major triggers of social animosity, but the slightly-more-subtle cues are, well, subtler. But don't be fooled: They can be just as damaging to our reputations as a thirty-minute ...
