IRVINE, CA, February 22, 2011 (Press-News.org) Students enrolled in high school, undergraduate or graduate programs in academic institutions in Orange County, and postdoctoral fellows in Orange County are invited to apply for Young Scientists Awards offered by the Alzheimer's Association, Orange County Chapter.
"The purpose of the awards is to encourage our bright young scientific scholars to pursue a career in the field of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias," said Jim McAleer, president and CEO of Alzheimer's Association, O.C. "Orange County is one of the hardest hit regions in the nation, with 75,000 individuals in the county affected by Alzheimer's or related dementia — a number expected to double by 2030. Our mission is to attract talented young scientists to join the ranks of our esteemed research community to end this disease."
Post-doc and graduate student applicants working in biomedical, clinical and psychosocial research, with a dementia or basic science focus, are encouraged to apply. High school and undergraduate students intending to pursue these fields are also encouraged to apply.
Post-doc award recipient will receive
• Registration and air fare to the 2011 International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease (ICAD) in Paris, France.
• $500 travel scholarship.
Graduate student award recipient will receive
• $1000 scholarship
High School and undergraduate students will each receive
• $500 scholarship
Awardees will be chosen each year by the Orange County Chapter's Medical and Scientific Advisory Board and honored at a reception hosted by the chapter.

- What is novel about your findings or the approach used?
- What steps have you taken to ensure that your data are solid and reliable?
- What exactly was your role in this project?
- Curriculum vitae, including a list of any publications.
- Name, address, phone, email
High School and under graduate students are asked to submit:
• 200-word summary of interest in pursuit of research/science
• Letter of support from academic advisor/science instructor/other
• Written answers (2-5 sentences each) to the following questions:
- Describe your interest in research as it relates to Alzheimer's disease or related disorders?
- Describe any activities you have undertaken that relate to Alzheimer's or related disorders
- Describe any projects/research projects/papers you have produced relating to research of any kind
• Name, address, phone, email, current school and year in school
