The Quartet invited six contemporary composers: Charles Wuorinen, Solfia Gubaidulina, John Harbison, Vijay Iyer, Bruce Adolphe and Stephen Hartke, to engage with unfinished works by Dufay, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Shostakovich and to "respond" to them, weaving new works. The new compositions will be played alongside the original ones (10/1/11). The Chamber Music Society of Detroit's portion of the commission is sponsored by Ruth Rattner and Ann and Norman Katz.
• The CMSD has also co-commissioned Ellen Taaffe Zwilich to write a new work for the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson for piano trio, viola and contrabass. The September 17 program also includes another work written for the same instrumental combination, Schubert's great "Trout" Quintet. The CMSD's portion of the consortium commission is sponsored by Cecilia Benner.
