Shedding Some Light into Mystery of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Leading Stem Cell Procedure Provides Potential Option for IPF Patients

2011-03-11
LA JOLLA, CA, March 11, 2011 (Press-News.org) Recent research released last month by the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine has indicated that viral infections are not an underlying cause of acute exacerbations of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

While some treatments with corticosteroids and cytotoxic drugs exist, there is no known cure for IPF. However, some breakthrough advancements with stem cell procedures have been showing promising signs for those patients afflicted with the disease.

The Adult Adipose-derived Stem Cell Transplant program was launched last year by the International Stem Cell Institute (ISCI). Based out of San Diego, California, the institute is a global advocate of stem cell research and treatments.

"With no known cure for IPF, it is critical to promote the advancements of stem cell procedures as a viable option," said Rita Alexander, President of the International Stem Cell Institute. "We have seen significant improvements in patients who have been suffering the devastating effects of IPF."

ISCI physicians use a proprietary Autologous Adult Adipose-derived Stem Cell Transplant process developed over the last 6 years by AdiStem Ltd., a world leader in biotechnology. During the procedure, adipose tissue (fat) is removed from the patient using mini-liposuction, and processed with a combination of PRP (platelet rich plasma) which includes growth factors that have a powerful impact on cell development, growth and proliferation. A specialized low laser light is used to activate the stem cells, and is then administered via an IV infusion over a 1-2 hour period of time. The IV infusion is an easy outpatient procedure and an excellent method for treating IPF.

IPF is a terminal disease that causes scarring of the lung for which there is no known cause. It is classified as an interstitial lung disease. According to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, there are approximately 128,000 afflicted with IPF. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing, and a decreased tolerance for activity. It is believed to be an inflammatory response to an unknown substance.
