HARROGATE, ENGLAND, September 09, 2010 (Press-News.org) Construction Leeds was at the heart of making 13 shared bin yards in the Comptons, Harehills, more attractive for residents and less appealing to travelling criminals, who used the yards' seclusion for anti-social activities.
The three-month project was carried out in conjunction with Taurus Construction, from Calverley, who cleared the yards of debris, and replaced the tall, brick walls and broken wooden gates with "dwarf" walls, metal railings and lockable gates.
These enhancements have now improved visibility and security of the yards. It is hoped this will lead to a reduction in crime and prevent people fly tipping.
Taurus Construction Contracts Manager Steve Smith said: "This was a real community regeneration project and I'm delighted to say we have completed it well ahead of schedule.
"The residents had been crying out for something to be done to improve these shared yards for a long time, and the work we have done has made a tremendous difference to the look and feel of these few streets.
"The dark, dingy yards, which were a haven for anti-social behaviour, have been totally transformed. Gone are the high walls and wooden doors. These have given way to lower walls, railings and lockable gates. You certainly can't hide in these!"
Construction Leeds Project Manager Rob Wolfe said: "The Taurus team have done a fabulous job transforming the bin yards. They were also kind enough to give four of our members the opportunity to work on this demolition and construction project.
"Being an arm of regeneration charity re'new, part of our remit is to help the unemployed and under-employed find work with local construction firms.
"These four have gained valuable experience and I'm delighted to say two of the four have now been offered jobs with Taurus."
Rob added: "We are very grateful to Leeds City Council who have funded the project and East North East Homes for their ongoing support. On the back of the success of this, I hope we are able to partner Taurus Construction in future regeneration initiatives.
"We may have 'bin and gone' in the Comptons, but let's hope if funding permits we can carry out a similar schemes to the benefit of the Leeds residents."
