Green is the Primary Color for Arizona Elementary Schools
SKY Renewable Energy helping AZ schools become more energy efficient
PEORIA, AZ, March 31, 2011
SKY Renewable Energy is completing its ninth canopy solar panel installation in Arizona elementary schools across the state. These solar power installations assist school districts in modernizing and reducing their energy consumption so that they may reallocate their savings on classroom initiatives."Most of the solar panel systems installed in these Arizona elementary schools are 30 kw and will also provide
shade canopy for outdoor student activities," said SKY Renewable Energy Vice President Scott Young. "This will
result in approximately an annual $12,000 reduction in electricity bills for these schools."
In October 2009, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer announced that Arizona school districts would receive American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds for solar energy projects through the State Energy Program (SEP).
School districts applied through a competitive process for the Solar on Schools Grants managed for the state of
Arizona by the School Facilities Board (SFB).
"The SKY Renewable Energy solar canopy installations will use the power generated from the renewable system
first," said Young, "and then draw power from the grid."
Among the schools granted funds, SKY Renewable Energy has installed the solar canopies in San Fernando
Elementary School in Sasabe, Hillside Elementary School in Bagdad, Apache Elementary School in Douglas,
Yavapai Elementary School in Scottsdale, Patagonia Elementary School in Patagonia, Kirkland Elementary School
in Kirkland, Kiser Elementary School in Gila Bend, Blue Elementary School in Blue and Tonto Basin Elementary in
Tonto Basin.
Some Arizona schools are not only making strides to become more environmentally friendly by installing solar
power canopies, they are providing hands-on lessons about renewable energy. Students who learn how to lead
more sustainable lives will help guarantee that subsequent generations have a safe and healthy place to live.
Children can also learn lessons about renewable energy on the SKY Renewable Energy website kid's page ( http:/
/www.skyrenewableenergy.com/kids ) with coloring worksheets that introduce Sheriff Green and the energy
hogs: Drafty Darlene, Lights on Lewis, Sloppy Sara and Wallis Water. Children can enjoy coloring and learning
environmentally responsible lessons such as turning off the lights, closing the refrigerator door and not wasting
water. SKY Renewable Energy will also come into the classroom to speak to children and teens about energy
green education -- an ideal topic for any grade level!
