Utilising IT to Grow out of the Crisis
Brian R. Lurie, a speaker at the marcus evans CIO Asia Summit 2010, discusses the opportunities for growth through IT.
MACAO, CHINA, August 15, 2010
Information Technology (IT) spending has been on the rise globally, as companies recognise the potential that IT has in helping the business grow in difficult economic times. Nevertheless, Chief Information Officers (CIOs) should recognise that it is not the actual application of technology but the appropriate placement of it that guarantees growth, says Brian R. Lurie, Vice President IT Global Strategy Planning at Stryker Corporation US. A speaker at the marcus evans CIO Asia Summit 2010 taking place in Macao, China, 18 - 20 October, Lurie discusses the role of IT in the current business landscape, and his projections for the next few years. How can IT help businesses emerge from the economic crisis?
Brian R. Lurie: IT spending has been on the rise around the world, as people recognise that efficiencies can be gained through the application of technology. However, it is important to note that it is not the application of technology that guarantees growth, but the appropriate placement of it. Applying technology is not just for the purpose of automation, but to provide business intelligence that allows the business to make better decisions.
The global marketplace has become more competitive than ever before. Those who provide and apply technology have become business partners who can relate to customers and interact with them in a true partnership. Although this seems like marketing, it comes down to one-on-one relationships and people supporting people. Applying technology benefits the business' bottom line.
In a shrinking global economy we need new ways to interact and be productive. There are still opportunities to grow, and it will be fascinating to see which companies and countries in Asia are able to leverage their native growth capabilities.
