OCEANSIDE, NY, May 05, 2011 (Press-News.org) A three-day weekend mega-sale featuring Disney items, toys, toy soldiers, Hollywood memorabilia, toy trains, vintage dolls, mechanical and still banks, folk art pieces, cast-iron door stops, advertising items, World's Fair material and more will be held May 20-22 by Philip Weis Auctions, in the firm's spacious gallery facility located at #1 Neil Court.
Three-day sales, rare for most auction houses, have become commonplace at Philip Weiss Auctions. "We'd love to limit our events to one or two days, but when you have close to 1,500 lots in such a wide variety of categories, it becomes impossible," said Philip Weiss. "It's all about the consignments, and the merchandise we get is top quality and fresh to the market."
The upcoming auction will kick off on Friday afternoon, May 22, with Hollywood memorabilia (to include more material from the estate of Lester Glassner) and Disney items (to include the partial collection of Joel Cohen, owner of Cohen Books & Collectibles). The session will feature around 400 lots and begin promptly at 4 p.m. (EDT). A preview will be held all day.
The Hollywood memorabilia will feature a large collection of movie press books from the 1930's-1970s, an archive of negatives from photographer Harry Langdon, some oversized photos by Langdon, a collection of original Universal candid production set stills, a collection of Linda Darnell material (including lobby cards and posters), an original charcoal portrait by James Montgomery Flagg, a collection of 1920s theater photos by Paul Weber, and other items.
The Disney items from the Joel Cohen collection will include vintage paraphernalia, books, ephemera, toys, pottery, porcelains and general collectibles from the 1930s and '40s. Other Disneyana will feature convention statues, Lenox, Waterford, Armani, and four original watercolor on board paintings of Snow White and Bambi from the New York Graphic Society.
The Saturday session, on May 21, starting at 10 a.m., will feature a staggering 700 lots of toys, toy soldiers, toy trains and mechanical and still banks. The vintage toys will be tin litho, cast-iron and more. Expected star lots will include a Stevens & Brown black boy on Velocipede, a Browers Black Dandy clockwork toy and an American Clockwork gig with articulated horse.
Toy trains will include pieces by makers Lionel, American Flyer, Marklin and Ives. Also offered will be part of a single-owner collection of LGB large-scale trains, mint in the box. Thousands of toy soldiers will come from several estates, including Part 4 of the Edward Ryan collection. Sold will be Britains, Mignot and other makers, as well as many group lots and diorama type pieces, plus paper and cardboard soldiers with sets by Parker Brothers, McLoughlin and more.
The wonderful selection of still and mechanical banks will include a Magician bank, Dark Town Battery, an Organ bank, Teddy and the Bear and more. Dolls will feature a collection of Klumpe dolls, a fresh-from-an-estate bisque head Jumeau, an incredible 1900's puppet theater with six puppets, and many bisque head and composition dolls from a variety of manufacturers.
As with past three-day sales, Philip Weiss Auctions is saving the best for last for this one as well. On Sunday, May 22, at 10 a.m., about 250 lots of folk art pieces, cast-iron door stops, advertising items and World's Fair material will change hands. The folk art will feature a pair of outstanding wood tobacconist trade store figures - a Turkish fellow and a black man with a cigar.
Other folk art will include two superb carved eagles (including a large carved plaque and a carved pilot house eagle from the 1870's), two large pocket watch iron clock trade signs, a Civil War flag from 1864, period painted and decorated drums, a sheet iron Indian with bow and arrow weather vane, and an incredible circa 1895 Dentzel carousel horse in all original condition.
Advertising items will include a Niagara Fire Insurance reverse painted glass trade sign, a Bradley & Hubbard Sambo blinking eye clock, an Ebberts Wagon Co. self-framed tin sign, two Diamond Dyes country store cabinets, a Gloeklers Butchers trade sign, an 1890's Eberhardt & Ober Brewing Company lithograph, an early Ingersoll Rand railroad ticket box and other items.
Also sold will be an interesting collection of Planters Mr. Peanut items, to include neon clocks, a rare Mr. Peanut resin display blinker, glass jars, a 10-cent vending machine and a figural cast-iron Mr. Peanut fence sitter. The cast-iron door stops will feature an Anne Hathaway cottage, a rare Hubley tiger, a Highland lighthouse and examples by other makers.
The World's Fair material will include a wooden plaque from a 1939 pavilion building in New York, a concept study of the "Hall of Pharmacy" by Stuyvesant Van Veen, plates, pins, books, ephemera, souvenirs, original posters from the 1939 New York World's Fair, the only known amphitheatre stadium seat from the 1939 New York World's Fair (personally removed by the consignor), a 1964 New York World's Fair heliport architectural model and uniform jacket.
Online bidding for the auction will be facilitated by Proxibid.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be accepted. The next big auction after this one is slated for June 9 and 11, also in Oceanside. June 9 will be an estate sale, with Kittinger furniture, paintings, bronzes, porcelains and more. June 11 will feature sports memorabilia, rare books, autographs, stamps, coins, manuscripts, rock 'n' roll items and more. See the website for details, http://www.weissauctions.com.
