SAN DIEGO, CA, May 19, 2011 (Press-News.org) According to the latest data released this March, U.S. birth rates fell for all women except those 40 and older. For a variety of reasons, including postponing marriage and parenthood to concentrate on education and careers, increasing numbers of women in their 40s and early 50s don't want to miss out on the joys of motherhood. Many who have given birth to their first child in their fifth decade are finding they are better prepared financially and emotionally for parenting. But though they may look and feel decades younger, middle-aged women who wish to become mothers still may need to use fertility treatment to get pregnant. Plus once they fulfill their dreams, they may face unanticipated challenges, like discrimination, along with unbridled happiness and satisfaction.
On the next episode of The Surrogacy Lawyer: Your Guide to IVF and Third Party Family Building, Theresa Erickson, Esq., will be exploring the options for women to get pregnant in midlife, as well as what happens once they get there. Her guests include New England infertility specialist Dr. Vito Cardone and Angel LaLiberte, founder of the Flower Power Mom Website devoted to empowering older mothers. The show will air on Thursday, May 19 at 11AM PST/2PM EST on Voice America.
Dr. Vito Cardone, M.D., is founder and medical director of his third infertility clinic in the U.S., Cardone Reproductive Medicine and Infertility (www.cardonerepromed.com) in Stoneham, MA. Dr. Cardone received his medical and infertility training in Canada and France, but has been practicing in the U.S. since the late 1980's. His career is highlighted by several firsts, including heading the team that achieved the first donor egg pregnancy in New England. Fluent in Spanish, Italian, French and English, Dr. Cardone has earned a reputation for successfully treating older women with honesty and compassion. Against the odds and well into her forties, United Kingdom native Angel La Liberte conceived and gave birth to two healthy children without the aid of medical fertility treatments. Unwittingly, she was soon drawn into the rising international cause celebre in the baby-making stakes--the fast-growing population of 'mid-life moms'. An experienced writer and public campaigner on divorce and relationship issues, Angel transferred her passion into advocacy for the growing legions of older mothers via her website and blog, Flower Power Mom (www.flowerpowermom.com). Flower Power Mom recently launched A Child After 40, the first online community to empower all women on the journey of motherhood after 40, whether via natural conception or via treatment (http://flowerpowermom.com/a-child-after-40-online/).
"Over the last several decades there has been an significant increase in the number of women who are having their first child as prima gravidas, the medical term for older first-time moms" says attorney Erickson. "The good news is that midlife women have more options than ever before to experience pregnancy, childbirth and parenting thanks to experts such as Dr. Cardone and advocates like Angel LaLiberte are paving the way for acceptance by forming a community for their expanding numbers."

Penn research determines region of the brain necessary for making decisions about economic value

PHILADELPHIA — Neuroeconomic research at the University of Pennsylvania has conclusively identified a part of the brain that is necessary for making everyday decisions about value.
Previous functional magnetic imaging studies, during which researchers use a powerful magnet to determine which parts of a subjects brain are most active while doing a task, have suggested that the ventromedial frontal cortex, or VMF, plays an evaluative role during decision making.
Now, Joseph Kable, an assistant professor of psychology in Penn's School of Arts and Sciences, has demonstrated ...
It's not easy being green
2011-05-19
LA JOLLA, CA—The seeds sprouting in your spring garden may still be struggling to reach the sun. If so, they are consuming a finite energy pack contained within each seed. Once those resources are depleted, the plant cell nucleus must be ready to switch on a "green" photosynthetic program. Researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies recently showed a new way that those signals are relayed.
In a study published in the May 24, 2011, issue of the journal Current Biology, a team led by Joanne Chory, Ph.D., professor and director of the Plant Molecular and Cellular ...
