Richard Elementary School in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, Children Read 979,534 Pages During 2010-2011 School Year in Parent-Organized Reading Incentive Program, Reward With Carnival

"As a first year program, we are thrilled at the participation rate and that our children have read almost a million pages!"

2011-05-27
GROSSE POINTE FARMS, MI, May 27, 2011 (Press-News.org) On Friday, May 27, 2011, Richard Elementary School will reward 265 children who read over 979,534 pages combined in a parent-organized program called "Richard READS". The children earned tickets based on the pages they read that will be used to try to win donated prizes at the "Richard READS Carnival" this Friday. Of the 265 children, 131 boys and 134 girls participated, out of 410 students at the school.

"We designed this program to encourage our Kindergarten through 5th grade children to read outside of school by rewarding them with charms throughout the year and providing them with this carnival, which will include games and donated prizes", said Dawn Aldighieri, parent of a 1st and 3rd grader at Richard Elementary School. Aldighieri continues, "Our goal is twofold... For the children starting out as strong readers, we hope that Richard READS will encourage them to stay the course and perhaps read even more. More importantly, for the children who are not already avid or strong readers, we hope that the program will help them develop reading fluency and, ultimately a lifetime love of reading. As a first year program, we are thrilled at the participation rate and that our children have read almost a million pages!"

The Richard READS program had a participation rate by grade of:

Kindergarten 39 students read 74,638 pages
1st Grade 35 students read 58,964 pages
2nd Grade 46 students read 85,540 pages
3rd Grade 47 students read 160,217 pages
4th Grade 74 students read 511,375 pages
5th Grade 24 students read 88,800 pages

The students were rewarded based on pages read on a grade-level tiered system:

Kindergarten & 1st Grade | 50 pages = 1 carnival ticket | 1000 pages = medal
2nd & 3rd Grade | 75 pages = 1 carnival ticket | 2000 pages = medal
4th & 5th Grade | 100 pages = 1 carnival ticket | 3000 pages = medal

The children will redeem over 12,500 tickets to try and earn one of the many prizes that were donated to the program. Of those, 164 children earned medals.
