Space Laser Technology Makes for More Effective Traffic Law Enforcement

Laser technology developed for the military and the space program is making traffic monitoring and traffic law enforcement more effective.

2011-05-27
MARYLAND, MD, May 27, 2011 (Press-News.org) Laser technology developed for the military and the space program is making traffic monitoring and traffic law enforcement more effective. LIDAR a technology developed for the space industry is now being used to make streets throughout the United States and Canada safer.

This advanced laser technology makes red light cameras, speed cameras and traffic cameras more effective. The cameras are faster, more accurate, smaller and more portable than ever. This makes such cameras the most versatile and effective traffic law enforcement solution available to local government.

The technology is available in fixed and portable camera systems. Unlike earlier generations of cameras, these systems can now be mounted on small trailers and directly on traffic lights. This can make for a permanent solution to the problem of red light running. It also provides for a speed camera that can be moved anywhere in town if needed.

That way such cameras can actually be moved in order to cope with changing traffic patterns. In years past traffic law violators eventually figured out the location of the cameras and simply took other routes to avoid them. Now the cameras can be moved to catch them with LIDAR.

Since the new systems are more accurate the tickets they generate will be harder to challenge in court. This will make enforcement more effective and generate more revenue for local governments. Drivers will know they will not be able to get away with speeding and red light running.

These methods of low cost traffic monitoring are perfectly suited to today's municipal budgets. Many communities have to reduce their police forces or slash the police budget. Traffic law enforcement is generally the area of the police budget that faces the deepest cuts.

Taking advantage of speed cameras, portable camera systems, red light cameras and traffic speed cameras with LIDAR enables local governments to increase traffic law enforcement without increasing the police budget. Thanks to modern space laser technology police departments can now reassign officers to deal with more serious crimes and still protect pedestrians and drivers from speeders and red light runners.

Optotraffic, a Maryland company, offers complete red light and speed camera solutions. Optotraffic's patented portable system requires no attendant on site. The camera system uses space technology, digital photography, and fast processing speed.
