HOWELL, MI, June 08, 2011 (Press-News.org) Michigan software company Datura LLC proudly announces it has received US Patent No. 7,953,755, "Semantic relational database", for the breakthrough technology used in its Equal Format Database line of products and services. It was invented at Datura by Dean Keith, Dennis Keith, and Sarah Moss Keith.
A semantic-relational database is different because it stores any data as sentences. This differs from a traditional database design by eliminating custom records and structures. Future changes will not need special accommodations. Because sentences are stored in the same way no matter the data model, it is an equal-format database instead of a custom-format database. This flexible storage method works in a relational database system, or any other data storage system.
"Previous semantic data designs, such as the Semantic Web, are limited to three phrases - Subject, Verb, and Object. That's baby talk. It leads to limited expression and huge vocabularies", explains co-inventor Sarah Moss Keith. "That's why our full-syntax design uses modifiers and other language constructs, such as adjectives, adverbs, and punctuation. Not only does it allow a smaller vocabulary to be richer in expression, you can search for the individual pieces that make up the Subject, Verb, or Object."
Datura's design doesn't just use language, it uses meta-language. "Sentences about sentences is another one of our advancements", points out co-inventor Dean Keith. "This gives us a powerful way to store data about data, organizing it by project and program, tracking data changes and sources, applying sticky notes, and controlling security."
The engineering world needs more than this to solve portability and manage changes. "That's why we have a multi-part key system", says co-inventor Dennis Keith. "One part represents the database site. Another part stores the timestamp to make updates non-destructible. Another part tunes the system for interaction. Together the key parts create a global database system that can coordinate a global enterprise."
Datura has a line of Equal Format Database products and services that are based on semantic-relational databases. The server product line is called Legume. The client product line is called BeanCounter. Using Microsoft SQL Server, you can import and export data from many formats, including spreadsheets, text files, relational databases, XML, and RDF. Additional file formats can be managed through plug-ins written by third party vendors or custom written by users. A combined desktop version is available and is called BeanCounter Desktop. The introductory version has a price of $750 USD. The regular price of $1250 USD includes a year of updates.
