NEW YORK, NY, June 20, 2011 (Press-News.org) Richard P Brown, MD, and Patricia Gerbarg, MD, leading experts in the use of mind-body practices for relief of anxiety, depression, and PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) following mass disasters, return to Mississippi to train the trainers in a three-day program for health care providers from both the public and private sectors who are providing services to Mississippi residents affected by the Gulf Oil Spill. This FREE training, sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health Oil Spill Recovery Program, takes place June 20-22, 2011 at the Marsha Barbour Resource Center, 6815 Kiln Delisle Road, in Pass Christian, Monday June 20, from 9 am to 5:30 pm, and on Tuesday and Wednesday June 21 and 22, from 10 am to 5:30 pm. Follow-ups will be announced. Health care professionals may receive 18 hours of Continuing Education credits.

Drs. Brown and Gerbarg, integrative psychiatrists, teach a unique fusion of ancient and modern mind-body approaches derived from QiGong, yoga, Christian monks, Coherent Breathing, Open Focus Meditation, and martial arts. They are the co-authors of the award-winning How To Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton) with Philip Muskin, MD. Their Breath~Body~Mind programs, sponsored by Serving Those Who Serve (www.stws.org) have provided psychological and physical relief to hundreds of people affected by the World Trade Center attacks in NYC, as well as survivors of other disasters. Area residents of the Gulf Oil Spill have experienced and may continue to suffer from many of the same symptoms of stress and chemical exposure reported by 9/11 survivors.

Registration for the 18-hour training is on a first-come-first-served basis. Mississippi providers are given priority, and space is limited. Continuing education credits will be offered by the National Association of Social Workers (Mississippi chapter), the American Psychological Association, the National Board for Certified Counselors, the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), the Department of Education, and the Mississippi State Medical Association (through the Mississippi Department of Mental Health).

Dr. Brown, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York, gives over 200 medical lectures every year, including full-day courses for the American Psychiatric Association and other professional groups. He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation.

Dr. Gerbarg, Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College, graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. In addition to clinical practice, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from mass disasters.
