2011-06-23
CARROLLTON, TX, June 23, 2011 (Press-News.org) Critical Information Network (CiNet), LLC, and its Professional Security Training Network (PSTN) announces the release of its newly updated Campus Security Training Series. The interactive video and web-based training was created to offer campus security personnel and school resource officers the knowledge and skills needed to ensure safety and protect essential assets. PSTN's training curricula include real-world demonstrations and actual situations, greatly enhancing the learning experience and results.

"Our nation's schools must be safe havens for teaching and learning. Any instance of crime or violence at school not only affects the individuals involved, but also may disrupt the educational process, the school itself and the surrounding community" stated Mo Canady, Executive Director, National Association of School Resource Officers. "PSTN's Campus Security Training Series offers the security community the training they need to reduce the risk of violence and disruptive forces on our nation's academic campuses. NASRO is proud to support and participate in this vital training program."

This series addresses both routine and high profile events facing campus security professionals every day. With crime activity increasing in secondary schools and even elementary schools, PSTN now offers a course in Campus Security for Elementary, Junior High and High School. Topics of instruction include drug and alcohol activity, increased gun violence, bullying, non-students on campus, fights, vandalism and truancy.

Other courses included in the series are Fire & Emergency Response, Campus Awareness and Crime Prevention, Residence Hall Security, Report Writing, Crime and Incident Scene Protection, Legal Responsibilities, Special Events, Campus and Community Relations and Alcohol Abuse on Campus. The AICC/SCORM compliant content may also be used in conjunction with hands-on training, creating a comprehensive and effective blended learning approach.

"PSTN's new content format which includes interactive learning activities offers the student a vastly improved experience through a more instructionally sound platform, helping to achieve higher retention levels. We recognize the vital need to serve the growing challenges of campus security and we are proud to contribute to this critically necessary education" stated CiNet President and CEO Steve Albright.

The People's Republic of China should improve its system for ensuring the safety of its rapidly expanding nuclear power program, experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences say. Despite having 40% of the world's proposed nuclear power plants, the country lacks an independent regulatory agency and sufficient staff to keep pace with nuclear power development, they describe in a viewpoint article in ACS's journal Environmental Science & Technology. Qiang Wang and colleagues note that the Chinese government announced that it would suspend approvals for nuclear power plant ...

"The finding is significant when you consider that there are nearly 12 million cancer survivors living in the United States," said John Moran, assistant professor of health policy and administration, who led the study. Moran and his colleagues focused on a previously understudied group, cancer survivors in their prime working years -- between 28 and ...

Discards ban 'will boost fisheries', says new research

2011-06-23
Banning fisheries discards in the North Sea will promote fish stock recovery and increase fishermen's incomes, according to new research by scientists at the University of York. In the North Sea up to 75 per cent of fish are currently dumped after being caught, with the result that many fisheries are now badly overfished. In comparison, discards were banned in Norwegian waters in the late 1980s and their fisheries are now some of the most prosperous in the world. The research, published in the journal Reviews in Fisheries Science, involved a comparison of long-term data ...

Renaissance of 200-year old technology could ease 21st century sustainability challenges

That's the conclusion of an article on the technology — termed thermoelectrics — in the current issue of Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) the American Chemical Society's weekly newsmagazine. In the article, C&EN Senior Editor Mitch Jacoby ...
