Clayton Sleep Institute Presents CPAP Usage Results at International Sleep Conference
Mark Muehlbach delivers positive patient usage results in CPAP study
ST. LOUIS, MO, September 16, 2011
Mark Muehlbach, Ph.D., F.AASM, Clinical Director of the Clayton Sleep Institute, presented positive patient usage results for CPAP with an automatic ramp feature at the joint congress of the 4th International World Congress and 5th Conference of the Canadian Sleep Society. The study focuses on long-term patient feedback from both experienced and naïve CPAP patients on a novel automatic ramp feature in a fixed pressure CPAP. Muehlbach presented a poster of the study results on Tuesday, September 13th."The study showed in part that both experienced and naïve CPAP patients responded positively during the course of usage," said Muehlbach. "Positive ratings ranged from 88%-91% for 'Comfortable,' 90%-93% for 'Felt lower pressure,' and 85%-92% for 'Slept well,' he added.
The 90-day study involved 148 patients, broken down into two specific categories, naïve and experienced with CPAP. The 71 naive patients had no experience using a CPAP device, while the other 77 experienced patients had previous CPAP experience. Results were measured after 30 days and then again after 90.
Patients using CPAP therapy commonly wake from sleep during the night, and when they wake they are most likely to perceive high pressure. Some CPAP devices have a manually initiated timed ramp feature to relieve pressure during wakefulness. Using SensAwake technology to automatically detect the transition from sleep to wake, this ramp feature has been automated. As the patient wakens the pressure decreases automatically; as the patient begins to sleep again, it automatically ramps back to the prescribed level.
Fisher & Paykel provided funding for the original data collection in this study.
The Congress took place September 10-14, 2011 in Quebec City, Canada.
