VERMILLION, SD, November 21, 2011 (Press-News.org) The Vermillion Area Chamber of Commerce and Development Company (VCDC) is providing complimentary use of one of its downtown incubator offices to the South Dakota Nonprofit Association (SDNA).
The move is part of a broader strategic expansion the SDNA this year. Building momentum on its April designation by Governor Daugaard as the SD Commission for National and Community Service, SDNA has been advancing its tripartite mission of providing leadership training programs, engaging nonprofit organizations in networking opportunities, and advocating for the nonprofit sector as a whole.
VCDC's arrangement with SDNA is a demonstration of the VCDC's mission of encouraging enterprise development. Executive Director Steve Howe said, "I had to change my thinking of nonprofits in terms of economic development. As with the for-profit sector, nonprofit organizations create full-time, primary jobs; buy buildings; meet payroll; and consume goods and services the same as other enterprises. Having the SDNA in Vermillion is a great win for our community."
SDNA Executive Director John Grayson said the move into professional office space facilitates better service of the organization's mission of strengthening SD nonprofits. "The SDNA is still a fairly young organization," said Grayson. "Next year will be a significant capacity building year for us and the gift of space at the VCDC is a tremendous boost. We're grateful to Steve Howe and the VCDC Board for helping us during this critical growth phase."
As the primary user of the space, newly hired Managing Administrator Malene A. Little is delighted with the arrangement. She said, "I love the SDNA. I love knowing that I' m part of an organization that contributes to the success of all of South Dakota's nonprofit organizations. It's great to have professional office space so that we can be accessible to South Dakota nonprofits whenever they need us."

2011-11-21
GUELPH, ONTARIO -- Marketable yields of organic horticultural crops frequently fall below those of conventional crops; this and other factors restrict widespread adoption of organic production. Planting depth's effect on container-grown trees
2011-11-21
BLACKSBURG, VA -- Many landscape trees are started in-ground, then sold as bare-root ''liners'' to producers who plant them in large containers to grow. To minimize wind damage and to facilitate transport from potting areas to growing beds, the liners are often buried deeper than necessary. This deep planting of liners results in "finished" container plants with deep structural roots, important foundations of root systems responsible for trees' health and stability. Deep structural roots are thought to contribute to physiological stresses resulting from oxygen deprivation.
