2012-03-14
MIAMI, FL, March 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) WLRN-Miami Herald News, one of the fastest growing and most dynamic news services in South Florida, has been selected for a second year in a row to mentor an early career journalist through the Joan B. Kroc Fellowship Program. The program identifies and trains the next generation of public radio journalists and WLRN-Miami Herald News is one of only three national public radio stations in the country to receive this honor this year.

Now in its eighth year, The Kroc Fellowship is made possible through a 2003 bequest from Joan B. Kroc, the philanthropist and widow of McDonald's Corporation founder Ray A. Kroc. Each Kroc Fellow works alongside NPR journalists to gain experience in reporting, producing and editing digital news and multimedia production. Additionally, each Fellow spends time at an NPR Member station to explore journalism at the local level. WLRN-Miami Herald News is ranked number one in the state of Florida among NPR stations.

This year's Kroc Fellow, Tasnim Shamma, is a Princeton University student who will join the WLRN-Miami Herald News team from February 25 to May 25. Shamma has been a reporting and video intern for Newsweek, a writer for The Star Ledger in Newark and was the executive editor for multimedia for Princeton's school newspaper, The Daily Princetonian. She has received several journalism accolades and awards for her news stories, which have been featured on CNN, FOX, CBS and other reputable outlets.

Kroc Fellows are widely recognized for the impressive results they have brought to the news station. This is the second year in a row that WLRN has received the honor. Sarah Gonzales was placed as a Kroc Fellow with WLRN-Miami Herald News in 2011 and after the fellowship was hired to be WLRN's StateImpact Florida reporter. Sarah is based in Miami and covers statewide education issues. Her work has been awarded an SPJ Sigma Delta Chi and a regional Edward R. Murrow.
