WINTHROP, MA,May 04, 2012
Summer of 2011 left Doug Sabbag and his wife a little more shaken up than planned. The plan was to leave Boston aboard their 50ft ketch (Triumph) and head for Europe. Unfortunately, just southeast of Nova Scotia, Doug and his wife had to be rescued. First-hand experience taught them about the mistakes they made along the way and more importantly when they should have called for assistance versus when the original call was made. Doug will share with us what went wrong on his trip, solutions he came up with, and what happened during his rescue.Since four years old, Doug Sabbag has been at the helm thanks to both his father and grandfather. They taught him about setting sails, celestial navigation, maintaining and handling a vessel underway in both calm and stormy conditions. Doug has taken this knowledge and spent thousands of hours cruising coastal and blue water adventures in places such as: Bahamas, Keys, Floridian coastline to Cortez. Sabbag has also sailed from Florida, up the Eastern Coast to Boothbay Harbor, Maine with his wife. In July they'll be taking ownership of a 1986 Ta Chiao CT 56 ketch.
Doug has a US Coast Guard OUPV Captain's License and STCW certificate. His work and hobbies include: computer consultant, photographer, plays tennis, snow skis, and hopes to publish his newly written book. Doug lives in Charlestown, MA.
